LASIK

I can no longer wait!!! The vision in my left eye is getting more distorted so I will go for my consultation on July 15th. It will take 3 hours and I will know if I am a candiate for the type of astigmatism that I have and what type of Lasik, since I have found out there are several types.

ANd I have already been approved for financing since the one eye alone will cost 2200. I am very nervous and anxious but I know I HAVE to do this. The toric contact lens are no longer working for me at all. sad

personally, i think i will wait until about 20 years have passed and it has been proven that there are no detrimental, long-term ill effects from blasting away a layer of my cornea with a laser.

but good luck, i hope it goes well for you! a lot of people really like lasik.

Eye doctors have been trying to get me to do this for years, and at my last visit, the Dr. said he did not recommend it--that's the first time that's happened.

He said there are turning out to be more complications than previously thought.

He also mentioned that the new thing will be sort of a permanent contact lens.

Yes I have a genetic flaw all females in my family have this, Our left eye is bad and our right eye is 20-20.

My eye dr. said it was time to consider this becasue of the deteroration from the last yearly eye exam to this last one I had done recently.

My boss needs both of her eyes done. She is wearing special contacts that you can wear for a year and the cost her $400.

I know people who have had great results and others who wish they never would have done it. do your research as there are 2 different procedures and one seems to have a more troublesome recovery time.

strange, because they always said I should do it because my eyes were stable--not getting worse.

I'm not a dr, I don't pretend that I know everything, but I would get a 2nd opinion. I don't know if you HAVE to do this. My dr says glasses are actually best for astigmatism

I'm not a candidate because my astigmatism is sooooo high that I'd STILL have to wear corrective lenses after LASIK. And after 25 years of glasses and contacts my prescription is not stable enough. My doctors have always told me that I would need to have 2-3 years of little change in my astigmatism and that's NEVER happened. sigh

Good luck to you.

I would love to get rid of my contacts forever but I'm really scared of the side effects. Some people have no problems but the ones who do have major problems.

The whole thing just scares me, I guess.

Well I already have my list of questions written out and I recieved my 3 page 100 questionaire about my health and family history. I have called my eye dr. and physician to have my records sent to the eye dr.

This Dr. is the best in the state for my type of astigmistim and that is why the cost is no high, he is using cutting edgee technology and he uses lasers only.

I am still researching as well. I am not taking this lightly by no means!! My eye was stable for years but the strain of all the computer and paper work I do is really taking a toll on my eye.

the fact that you've researched it well, aren't going to a doctor on the cheap, and are only getting one eye treated means that any side effects will probably be at a minimum.

please tell us how everything goes!

I had it done 4 years ago and I am now totally blind.....JUST KIDDING. Based on my personal results I would highly recomend it. My eyes were even better after the procedure than my Doctor had expected. I can now see things off in the distance that I couldn't with glasses or contacts.

I had it done about 12 years ago. Best thing I've ever done for myself! The doc corrected one eye to 20/20 and the other to 20/40 so as to counteract the need for bifocals. It didn't eliminate it entirely, just pushed it back 10 years or so.

I'm 49 and still do not need bifocals, although I can't read little print that's within a foot or two of my face. And, sometimes my vision backs off a tad at night.

But those are very small things compared to never needing glasses or contacts. I am VERRRRY glad I had it done!

UPDATE!!! I went to the Dr. On July 15th and had a 3 hour testing and consultation and the news was not good!!!

First I am NOT A CANDIDATE for the Lasik surgery itself becasue my cornea is too thin. sad

Second the reason my vision is deterotaiting in my left eye is becasue I am in the first stages of developing cataracts. As many of your know I am a caregiver to my 87 yr old Grandmother and she is legally blind becasue of cataracts and glaucoma. It is very prominent in the Black community but can be treated with early detection. My right eye is still holding at 20/20 but may require surgery years down the road if a cataract developes.

Of course of was floored but my insurance is acting a ASS and won't help me pay ofr the surgery. My left eye tested at 20/60 and they want me to be at 20/100 or age 45 to 47 and then they would consider paying for it. I CAN NOT WAIT!!!

So my only option is a 3 in 1 sugery with will 1. remove the cataract and cornea, 2. correct the astigmatism and far-sightedness, 3. implant a permenant lens into the eye called the accommodating crytalens.

This will restore my vision to see near intermediate and far or distance for driving. There is no other way. I will go again next Tues for another 3 hours of testing and a second opinion from the most senior Dr. in the practice.

The surgery will take 30-45 minutes, i will be under general anesthesia and five different lasers will be used. The good news is once this is done my eye will NEVER have to have surgery again unless it is from an injury.

I will be off for 2 days on bed rest with the eye bandaged. The lens alone will cost 1,500 and the total procedure is costing 3,700 I have already been approved for the money.

I also need to speak with my asthma Dr. as well becasue I take ADVAIR and it says it can cause cataracts, i don't know if this accelerated the process or what and I need to ask him if I need to quit taking this stuff altogether.

But I am gonna do this I have to do this if i want my quality of life with better vision. I am upbeat and know I cant get through this fine at least I know what I am dealing with and how I must proceed!!!!!

I had to stop taking advair too. I was having severe leg cramps and I also had a change in my vision although the doc swore it was not related.

I have already had two second opinions and will return to the eye surgoen today for more testing and sizing of my eye. All three answers were the same I must do this and insurance still says they wont pay for it.

I contacted my asthma dr. and he sais I dont take ADVAIR enough to have caused this problem it is strictly genetic. I should have a surgery date by the end of the week. sad
