That gymnast should not feel so bad. I know it's easy for me to say, but there were other mistakes made by other athletes. She helped get them the silver, she didn't cost them the gold.
I hate gymnastics for that reason. It hardly matters that they're flying through the air doing things humans shouldn't be able to do. It only matters that they stepped on the landing. Yet Michael Jordan is able to miss half of his shots & he's the greatest player ever. My Legacy

I kept suspecting that there may be some doping going on, but then again these swimsuits are designed to make all of the swimmers as aerodynamic as dolphins in the ocean. I've noticed that with not just the Americans but all of the swimmers. There are people who are breaking the previous world records who are finishing fourth. I was thinking that this morning. Maybe they're not on drugs, maybe it's the suits. Not to say they're not amazing swimmers, but it's pretty odd that they are seconds in front of these world records. Every race is a new world record. Maybe the suit has tiny propellers in it. My Legacy

I'd like to say I'm really pround of the US olympians! Micheal Phelps you're amazing! America's political system used to be about the "pursuit of happiness." Now more and more of us want to stop chasing it and have it delivered.

Phelps given gold by .01 sec. Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it. |

Phelps given gold by .01 sec. The Serbians appear to agree with that sentiment. They're protesting his win. I have to say, though, the Serbian swimmer Phelps (arguably) beat is being a really good sportsman about it. He looks genuinely happy for Phelps and he's conducting himself perfectly. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

True and that was good. I just have not heard anyone that watched the race that would say he won. Even his own mother knew he was 2nd. The protest was squashed before the medals were even handed out though. They only looked at the overhead cameras and declared Phelps the winner. And Carol Huynh, female wrestler, just secured Canada's first medal placing!! She's going into a finals match for the gold, but she's guaranteed at least silver! [Edited 8/15/08 20:54pm] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

Team GB is kicking ass today!
Looks like we could well surpass our hoped for medal total. Got 7 golds already and Ainslie should get one in sailing soon enough. Here's hoping for the women's hockey. Tyson Gay doesn't even make the 100m finals. Bolt looks good for the final later. Whatever happened to US sprinting? Or British sprinting for that matter. Our current crops sucks compared to the athletes 4-10 years ago. Is Mark Lewis Francis injured? No good anymore?

Dayum! That was the most astonishing 100m run I've ever seen. Average start at best, looking around, easing up with 15 metres to go and crossing the line almost sideways and beating your chest for a 9.69?
Take away the easing up and throw in a dip for the line and you're looking at maybe 9.62 or so. Throw in the fact that there was no wind in favour or against and I think Bolt could run a 9.5 something in the right favourable conditions. A legal wind of +2.0 would knock another four or fifth hundredths off. Just scary! Maybe now that 200m record of Michael Johnson isn't as out of this world and untouchable as we thought.

Cracks me up how on other Yahoo Olympic pages the medals table ranking is done with gold medals given prominence, but on the US page they just do a total medal count so that USA (with its gazillion bronzes) can be above China (and its billion golds).

As for US sprinting, I think that a lot of potential sprinters are going to other sports like football and basketball where they can play wide receiver or point guard and get more money. Plus for some reason Tyson Gay has been hampered by hamstring injures this year, and I think psychologically that may have been a reason his times weren't that great in the sprints. Even so, the Jamaicans were most likely the favorites to win the gold medal. As for the British, Canadian and other European sprinters, most of those who competed for those countries in the past have actually come from Jamaica or the other Caribbean nations and got citizenship just to compete in the Olympics. Both Linford Christie of Great Britain and Donovan Bailey of Canada who won the gold medal in the 100 meters in 1992 and 1996 respectively were actually Jamaican transplants. Now as for Usain Bolt, that time is unreal! I didn't think that it would be possible to run that fast. I thought that these sprinters were approaching the maximum limit a human being could run without completely destroying the body, but I guess I was wrong. [Edited 8/16/08 13:09pm]
