"Pee-wee's Playhouse" ran from 1986 to 1991 and spun-off a whole Pee-wee industry,... more with feature films and in-character interviews on talk shows. It won several daytime Emmys and made kids' shows cool again. "I know you are, but what am I?" was never funnier. Honest.

Now: Reubens had a few brushes with the law, with arrests in 1991 in Florida for lewd conduct in an adult-film theater (in exchange for public service, his record was cleared), and again in 2002 on possession of pornography (he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor). The first arrest caused speculation that it was the end of Pee-wee, and in fact, Reubens spent the next decade and a half busily acting -- but not as Pee-wee -- on shows such as "30 Rock," "Dirt" and "Reno 911!," as well as in films. And it appears time heals all wounds; Reubens recently announced that "Pee-wee's Playhouse: The Movie" was in preproduction and is due in theaters in 2009.
