My parents came from North East India in Bengal. Coming from an Anglo-Indian family the kind of Indian food that is largely made by aunties and sometimes uncles is mainly aromatic and usually has meat in it. Also there are influences from the Portuguese and even the British. It depends on the meal.

I don't really dig meat too much- if anything i'll have lean minced beef..or chicken or seafood...so on that note if I had to choose from what my family eat i'd say my favs are Crab Curry, Tandoori chicken with raita and paratha, Bhaji (this is vegetarian) with raita and paratha and (chicken) Kati kebab with salad and chilli and paratha.

I LOVE South Indian food. Most of my mum's side don't really dig it too much. They are more vegetarian based and their cuisine is such coz many of them are Hindu and other religions. I love Khari which is vegetable pakoras in a chick pea based soup- women have it at a certain time in the Hindu religion i believe and it's also known as a 'poor man's meal'...it's simply delicious! Dense in flavour- just make sure you don't over do the chilli lol eek...then there is Masala Dosai which is this i dunno rice-based flat pancake-like *thing* which tastes awesome and is stuffed with potatoe cooked with cummin seed and perhaps saffron and other spices. You have that with sambal dhal and chutney and i also love having mint sauce with it which nicely balances it out drooling

Anyone here a fan of Indian food? One of my dearest friends was born in northern India and moved to the States when he was 9 years old. He's going to cook for me this weekend and he is a vegetarian. Problem is, I dont really care for Indian food. I like a couple dishes but most of it is waaaaay too spicy for my palate. Do you guys like Indian food, if so, what are your favorite dishes?

Indian food. drool

My faves:

Butter chicken (chicken cooked with tomatoes and cream or butter)
Palak Paneer (curried spinach and cheese) drool
Aloo Gobi (potatoes and califlower -usually not too spicy)
Tikka Masala (creamy veggie curry, usually with almonds)
Lamb Madras (medium spice curry sauce
Beef Vindaloo (spicy as a mother! don't try this if you don't handle hot stuff well)

Ooh i love aloo gobi with like paratha and raita and mint sauce drooling lol

Big Indian food fan here. YUM.

Usually start with a samosa or a mushroom pakura depending on the restaurant, followed by a nice salan curry.

And I do like to spurge on extra naan if possible.

I'd kill for some veggie pakora right now. drool

I like it, which is a good thing.
Some of it here in the UK can be quite heavy with creams and fried.
I like the lighter stuff that is spicy.

Indian food is different in each city in India.

Most restaurants in Canada / USA usually serve Northern Indian food.

Southern Indian food is also good but not available everywhere.

The best place in India to taste all types of Indian foods is Mumbai.

FYI Vindaloo is a Goan Pork dish and does NOT have potatoes in it.

Love Indian food!

Just ask your friend to be careful with the spices, let him/her know that it's all new to you and not overdo it... communicate!

I think if you explained how you feel in as tactful a manner as possible, they would understand your position.

Hey no problem! Also have a sweet drink nearby in case something gets too hot. The sweet cuts the heat... I don't know if Indian food has anything like a Thai Iced Tea (drool) but those really help knock down that fire... Like a sweetened milk would be ideal...

Hey everyone. Just wanted to let u guys know how the food was. Surprisingly, it was not bad at all. He actually made a chicken dish for me which had this really mildly spiced redsauce served with rice. Sorry, I forgot what the name was. We had flatbread and lassis which were made with yogurt fresh mango and we had tea and caramel cake for dessert. It was really delicious. biggrin
