DevotedPuppy said: JasmineFire said: what's so wrong with a woman wanting to be a woman and wanting to be treated accordingly? what's so wrong with treating women with respect? we get paid $0.70 on the dollar compared to men, we are often the ones who are giving birth and raising children, cooking, cleaning house, and pleasing our men. Not all of us are these ultrafeminists who want to be just like men, many of us just want to be treated well. What's so wrong with giving up your seat to a woman passenger on the train? especially if you're going to get off in one or two stops? There is nothing wrong with treating women with respect, but in this scenario it seems like the women want special treatment just because they are women. You bring up women earning less--implying women should be paid equal to men, but then it's okay to want to be treated like the 'weaker sex' by having men presume you can't stand in heels on the subway? To me, that's a double standard. I want equal pay, too; and really, I don't mind standing...I am happy that I am healthy enough to stand (as opposed to being in a wheelchair, or homebound, or too overweight, etc) I don't think it's about "ultrafeminists wanting to be treated like men;" it's about wanting to be treated with respect regardless of gender, race, etc. That's not a feminist thing, that's a human rights thing, imo. Just because it's a guy sitting doesn't mean he's not tired, or had a shit day at work, or just wants to sit and relax on the subway. So why should he (or anyone) be denied of that just because a woman may want to sit? Maybe the guy wants to sit too. Hell, everyone on the subway probably wants to sit, so someone is not going to get their way. i'm not saying that women should or shouldn't get equal pay, i just stated it as a fact. As we saw from janfriend's posts, assuming is never a good thing. my point was that women make many sacrifices for men so it shouldn't be a big deal for men to do it for women. i think that women should be treated with respect as well but i think that my idea of respect just differs from yours. and that's OK! Hell, everyone on the subway probably wants to sit, so someone is not going to get their way
yeah, that's the damn truth! especially on the 6 during rush hour...damn! [Edited 8/2/08 19:10pm]

JasmineFire said: okay. so why is a man giving up his seat to a woman not common courtesy? i guess a woman could always give her seat up to a man if she so desired. Why is a man not giving up his seat to a woman being a jerk? A man giving up his seat would be courteous but it's not a requirement; and if he chooses not to, I don't think it should be held against him. And yes, women could do the same. I have given up my seat to guys that have a lot of bags or whatever. oh and I also decline to sit down a lot of times when guys offer me their seats. Especially if I'm only going a few stops. I even dislike it when I'm in line to get on the bus and guys that were clearly there before me insist on letting me go first. I'm like, just hurry up and get on the bus so we can go! . [Edited 8/2/08 19:10pm] Yeah, I just heard on the news that the MTA has ordered new subway cars where the seats flip up and lock like that. They plan to use them during rush hour so they can accomodate more people (but no seats for anyone). I'm glad my commute won't be affected by this because I think this sounds miserable. I hate being packed in like sardines and having guys take advantage of the close quarters to cop a feel.

As for the most hateful Americans: That goes to Bostonians, absolutely no contest. If you got that vibe that we are hateful, you must be one of those rude tourist who walk in through out doors, or maybe one of those annoying students from out of town who drive 25 mph on the highway and double parks on the main roads? GO SOX, PATS & CELTS!!! We Rule!!!!! Maybe now that you guys have stopped ripping your highways apart after 16 years and (presumably) no longer have collapsing tunnels I'll be brave enough to drive at 26 mph! Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

The #6 train at rush hour is a nightmare - this will make it worse. Sh!t. F-ck the MTA. Bastards are worse than the Mafia. Exactly. I am tired of them raising fares saying they won't do it for x years, then they have a surplus, then oops, we messed up. They need to get it together. But to be fair, the news story said they hadn't decided with lines will be the ones with these new cars. They said the MTA expects it will allow 18% more people on each car. Ugh. I wouldn't be surprised if it is the 4, 5, and 6--they are all packed. They really need to follow through with the 2nd Ave line. I used to live by the 6 and I hated it. It was almost more crowded on the weekends. Now I am on the westside by the 1,2,3, A,C,B and D so it's great. And JasmineFire, I think the L line is fully computerized now. It is truly my least favorite line so I avoid it (and Williamsburg) like the plague. When I first moved to NYC I lived in Alphabet City and had to commute to Morningside Heights for grad school. That f*cking train was messed up all the damn time--I was always late for class, or would try to go to the library on the weekends only to find the L wasn't running.

I simply asked for you to elaborate on why you feel DC has "European" architecture. Is it because of the style, the layout of the District, the materials used, or what? I brought up skyscrapers because in DC nothing can be taller than the Washington Monument and I was thinking of how Paris only has skyscrapers in La Defense--is that what you meant? Finally, it's pretty rude to tell me to "calm the fuck down"...obviously you don't "know" me very well if you don't think that was calm. You seem to be awfully agressive when asked some basic questions about an innocuous statement you made. You must have had some rationale for thinking DC has European architecture, please enlighten us since you don't think we're able to infer what you meant from your post. Really--according to your own description of New Yorkers, I'd think you were one if I didn't know better. . As a native Noo Yawka, all I can say that no other city like this exists in the world.
It's an International City where anything and everything is possible because so many people come here and make the city their own. It's the city that never sleeps, the city where all the critics love you, home of the Bronx Bombers, and Broadway, the financial capital of the world, the media center of the moment, and the World's Richest City with at last count, 31 Billionaires living here. It's the city of the Statue of Liberty, gateway to the United States for wave after wave of immigrants who came here through Ellis Island to settle in the Lower East Side. It's the home of Chinatown, Little Italy, Little India, Soho, Noho, St. Marks Place, the Empire State Building, Coney Island, Nathan's hot dogs, Central Park, Museum Mile, the Strand bookstore, Times Square, Columbia, Fordham, and NYU, the Letterman show, Late Night with Conan, and of course Saturday Night Live. New York is what it is because it takes everything homegrown and imported and transforms it into something better. The subway, the buses, the taxis, the energy of New York just magically transforms a place from the grit of East New York to the shining towers near Tiffany's. Fifth Ave, Madison Ave, Bleecker Street, Canal Street, every neighborhood is a peek into another world. From the homes of All in the Family, to the luxury apartments of the Jeffersons, from the coffee shops of the Friends, to the shoppes of the gals from Sex and the City, from the classrooms where Mr. Kotter teaches, to the clubs where Tony Manero changed the world, from the diners where Jerry, Elaine, Kramer, and George talk shop, to the streets where Law and Order reign, there is nothing like New York. Dollar hot dogs are across the street from Lincoln Center, high and low culture mixing into something quite extraordinary. Are New Yorkers the coolest Americans? No, but New York City is one of the coolest places in the world. [Edited 8/12/08 19:12pm] Some people tell me I've got great legs...
