I'd venture to say, all things being equal, New Yorkers are forced to be the most cosmopolitan. If that makes people cool, well, there ya go. But I think being cool entails considerably more than that... and I've found the most interesting Americans I've come across have spent time in several different places, picking up nuances from all over.

As for the most hateful Americans: That goes to Bostonians, absolutely no contest. shake (And I say that as one who actually really likes Boston in spite of itself. smile )

Agree. I think New Yorkers in general hate having their time wasted by anything. I always explain it as:

New York is like a finely oiled machine. Everyone knows where they are going and they are trying to get there as quickly and efficiently as possible because in NYC time often = money, thus wasting time = wasting money (which most people think is bad). So yes, they get annoyed when Dick and Linda decide to stop in front of the MTA turnstile at Grand Central during rush hour to look for their subway card, or saunter down the sidewalk--taking up the entire sidewalk--while looking at a map while everyone else is behind them is trying to get somewhere! pissed (Move tha' fuck out tha' way!)

I call that "fucking up the flow" and I warn all first time visitors not to do it no no no!
