Martin Lawrence- One of the best comedians, yet very underrated.....why is this?

IMO, Martin Lawrence is one of the best comedians of our time, and still, people criticize him and reduce his talent, when in fact, he still makes me piss myself laughing. I was watching "Black Knight" yesterday, and I liked him in that movie so much that I watched it twice! His HBO comedy special was slammin, his newest stand up movie was awesome, and not to mention all of his movies like Bad Boys, Big Mommas House, and his sitcom work on "Martin", and others. Let me know what you all think, but if there was an award for best consistent comedy performances, he would get my #1 vote!

I don't know... I really don't care for Martin Lawrence... I just don't find him funny. I did want to see his HBO special to see if I found his stand up any good, but I missed it.

i think it's one of those cases of his off-screen behavior overshadowing his talent. he's a very funny guy but i think a lot of people have given up on him.

underrated? shake

he can be funny..but he has yet to grow his talent into something that is consistent and thought provoking...

so do i think he is underrated? i think your statement is overrating his talent..

but then what do i know? i think sandra bernhardt is a genius.. wink

Actually, I left the theatre after the first 15 minutes of Big Momma's House.

In my opinion, Martin Lawrence is ok at best, in short sitcom's or skits...he doesn't have the talent to carry an entire movie.

I, for one, don't think he is funny.

Funny to me is:

Bill Cosby
Robin Williams
Steve Martin
Jim Carey
Will Smith
Jerry Sienfeld
Carol Burnett
The Three Stooges... lol

Just to give you an idea of my tastes in comedy...there are others.

personally... i think if you think martin is funny, you should check out richard pryor's stand up comedy movies (live in concert, live on the sunset strip, here and now) and see where he got a lot of his material from. smile

along with eddie murphy's delirious and raw as well.

just an opinion!

$.02.

I don't care for him either.

I find him to be a very poor version
of Eddie Murphy, with bad material!
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Because he's no Chris Rock when it comes to stand up and no Eddie Murphy when it comes to movies.

Richard Pryor could Show Martin Lawrence how it's done.Martin lawrence should have been the Eddie Murphy of the 90's.He had the Shot but Hsi Films are so Cookie-Cutter that they are like a Dime a Dozen.now this Last Stand-up performance should have been bigger for Him but it didn't quite move enough folks. He has A Good Sense of Humor but is only as good as the Supporting Cast He has around Him IMHO.He Can Carry a Movie far Better than Chris Rock but then again that ain't saying much because Pee Wee Herman can Carry a Movie more than Rock.but Martin while Funny is just short on the Bigger picture.

i'm just wondering why would somone go see a film like 'Big Momma's House'.going just by the trailer you can tell it isn't funny in any way, shape or form.

What a waste of 90mins of your life if you watch that.

I'll admit this just once... lol

I went to see it on a day when I was obviously out of it, LOL...I thought I was going to see "The Klumps"(?) by Eddie Murphy (which I later heard sucked anyways)...

neutral

Plus, I only wasted 15 minutes razz

I actually enjoyed "Big Momma's House"...but as far as stand up comedians go, in addition to those already mentioned (Eddie, Richard, etc), I like Margaret Cho.
