being called"sir/madam" in hotels, being waited on...etc-ISNT IT BRILLIANT???

i dislike it immensly

in my new professional capacity i frequent some of NEWZEALANDS finest hotels and baby jesus do i hate being waited upon-

i understand its all part of "hospitality" but i often wonder the pschological makeup of those of enjoy being made serviant (is that a juxtapose to subserviance??)

now im in the"business world" i can totally appreciate how this life could make one arrogant-if your company pays for all these perks whom do you say thankyou to??!!

i sit and watch and listen at the utter ridiclous things we humans occupy our time with-everyones SO serious and pre-ooccupied by THEIR business and THEIR jobs etc

how all consuming.....honesty in a job is such a rare commodity

so look if you meet me-impress and DONT ask me'so what do you do"

does it fucking matter at all???!!??

oh goodness i am becoming more and more nihilstic

and definatly ever rambling!

I don't like being waited on at all. I'd rather stay at a hostel where you have to carry your own shit than a nice hotel where waitstaff trails you around.

As for the Sir/Madam thing, I kinda like it. But then, I address other people as such, so it's not like it's an issue of inequality for me the way being waited on is.

It gets old quickly. I do a lot of traveling and my company puts me up in the same places most of the time, so after seeing the same staff several times over the course of the year we are on 1st name terms. I do tip a lot I've noticed, not bad for a Jew biggrin

I recently had similar experience in India, everybody is half killing themselves just to please you. I found just say thanks you and smile worked very well. Nothing wrong with people doing their job with pride and makes the buisness trip all the better. I think the problem comes when you treat them like shit and yet they still have to wait on you.

Gary, I realize this is a joke, but why would you want to perpetuate bullshit stereotypes about your own culture?

The concierges in my building call me "Sir". At first, it kinda weirded me out, but now I think I kinda like it. smile

As for society's obsession with what we do for a living, that isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Doesn't mean it has to affect you.

I think some of us are so possessed by our jobs because of all the effort that went into getting there and what it provides us...

I'm self-employed and immensely proud of that. I worked my frikkin' ass off to get things running and I work even harder to keep it afloat. That is something I'm terribly proud of. However, I don't let it go to my head and act like I rule the earth and therein lies the difference.

My work provides my family with food and shelter and we appreciate that.

As I've grown older, I have noticed people calling me "Sir" more often and I'm only 36!! It's what's taught to people in service positions these days and unless you've met them before it's what is to be expected.

When meeting new people or colleagues the first question often is about work because it represents our position in the greater hierarchy of mankind. You don't meet a complete stranger in a business setting and ask if he plays football, do you? It's simply become conventional to ask this type of question to break the ice...
