I have Vonage and most overseas calls are free. Meggy and I both frequently call friends in the UK and have never been charged extra for it. I believe most of Europe is free. Long distance calls all over the US and Canada are free too. When her husband was in Japan it was only 6 cents a minute.
I LOVE Vonage, highly recommend it. "Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind"-Dr Seuss

Imago said: I know that when you call overseas to a cellphone, the rates that your calling card are charged to way up--but it's still cheaper than going through VONAGE or your phone company (average 29 cents to 32 cents a minute!!! )
On a good calling card, it's about 10 or 11 cents a minute. However, what if you are calling the local access number from a cellphone (which I discovered you can do), and dialing overseas that way. Are you charged more? Does your cellphone company charge you more? I would imagine your cellphone company sees it as a local phone call only--since you're dialing a local access number that relays to call for you. Does anyone know how calling cards work? Do you know any good calling card companies? Does anybody have pictures of their tits? [Edited 7/25/08 10:21am] Proud Memaw to Seyhan Olivia Christine ,Zoey Cirilo Jaylee & Ellie Abigail Lillian

I don't understand how it's dirt cheap for overseas people to call here and grip to call over there. I think this is how it works. You are given a local access number (555-1234) that is a local switching station in your town. You call THAT number. Then a system asks you for your code. You enter the code you're given on the card (or online card), and then you dial the real number you intend to call. Instead of your phone dialing it directly, the switching station (the local access number) you're calling does it. On your phone bill, it appears like you made a local call. So your only expense is the calling card's fees and services. It normally saves folks a ton of money--the sound quality is not uber great, but if you're calling a lan line over seas, some calls can be as cheap as 1.5 US cents an minute (or less). But I'm not 100% sure this is really how it works. I just know that on your phone bill, it only shows the local access number (or 1-800 number) you call to make the long distance call. But I'm also confused if you're calling from a cellphone if the same rules apply. I would imagine so since you're using the local access number as the "Switch". I just don't know. This is new to me. is to is-not edit [Edited 7/25/08 10:33am] If you are calling from your cell phone you are still exhausting your bucket of minutes unless you have an unlimited plan and or weekends free. Use the home phone with the card.

Use the home phone with the card. Vonage is the way to go if you make a lot of overseas calls. I pay $35 a month including all taxes and can call all of Europe for as long as I want, nothing extra. A card might be cheaper if you want to call someplace in Asia but for the countries that are included in the Vonage fee, it's worth it. You also get all the other extras like caller ID, call waiting and voice mail included plus for around $5 more you can have a number that is the same area code as someone you cll frequently. I have a local area code but I have it set so my family in Canada can call me for free. If you're calling a cellphone, it will cost you 39 cents a minute, because an additional charge called a "mobile termination fee" is tacked on. Verizon, my carrier, charges 29 cents a minute for the termination fee which verizon calls "Premium calls" to cellphones overseas. But you have to pay 40 dollars a month for the verizon UK freedom plan (call the UK all you want as long as it's a lan line). Either way, calling cards are cheaper than all the carriers I checked (as cheap as 10 cents a minute for cellphones) including Vonage for calling UK cellphones. Oddly, the UK can call our cellphones and lan lines without the same stipulations.

Use the home phone with the card. Yeah, it wouldn't be a regular thing. Just gives me the ability to call and update folks if I'm out and about. Calls would be in the order of , "Hi, I'm at the saloon. I'll be home in an hour. I love you. I'm picturing you...naked... [click]". That sort of thing. On weekends, I can talk all I want on my cell.
