Minneapolis kitties--restaurant recommendations please!

A few of my co-workers are going to be in Minneapolis next week doing a program with the Walker Art Center. I think they are staying in hotels near that area. Do you locals have any restaurant recommendations I can pass along to them? (Preferably within walking distance from that area, although I believe they will have one rental car.)

The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

if they're staying downtown and just want something tasty and casual, they should go to pizza luce. they've got great pizzas (some of which are very unique), really good sandwiches and salads, and a good selection of beer if they need to put down a few.

i also take quite a few dinner breaks at keys restaurant at the foshay hotel. typical diner menu, but the quality is several steps above a regular greasy spoon (and it better be, with their prices). nice dining area with full bar. i'm in love with their tater tots (fancy, i know) and they have lots of nummy looking dessert options.

there's also an interesting looking place downtown called hell's kitchen, but i've never been there and maybe one of the veteran MPLS kitties can tell you about that.

OH: pizza luce and keys at foshay both have menus online, and if your friends are staying downtown and want decent delivery options, they should print the online menus to have in their hotel rooms. both deliver.

hmmm. the walker art center is now located near the river, right?

it's actually a pretty far distance to walk to downtown mpls from there. but, there is the spaghetti factory which is not too far, i think? and other places across the river (take the astone arch bridge) along the st anthony main waterfront

Pizza Luce is way yummy. nod

If you like sushi, Origami is amazing.

Oh - and the Oceanaire Room is pretty amazing, too. But be prepared to drop a bundle.

Walker is where it's always been; only the Guthrie moved.

Hell's Kitchen (on 10th st between Nicollet and Marquette) is my number one recommendation for weekend brunch in the city. It's a super cute place and sooooo yummy!

If the wait is too long there, Ike's restaurant (on 6th St a block or so east of Hennepin, across from City Center) is respectable for brunch as well. And HUGE portions.

The Walker is situated almost exactly smack in between downtown and uptown and I can't think of any hotels that are fewer than 5-8 blocks from there. My guess is they are staying downtown, the Hyatt or something on that end of Nicollet Mall. In addition to all of the above recommendations there's a great Thai restaurant in my old neighborhood (Loring Park) called The King and I.

Something else they could check out is the City Pages restaurant guide/recommendations. They can look up ones we've mentioned and others as well by price range, type of cuisine, neighborhood, etc.

that's a good point. by walking several blocks south, one could go to D'Amico's and/or Chipotle

Thanks everyone...I printed out this thread and gave it to my colleague. She will be there tomorrow. I gave her a cd of Prince songs specifically about Minneapolis (Uptown, Calhoun Square, Paisley Park, etc) for her flight, and tonight I will make another one of the "Minneapolis sound" for one of the other girls, who is arriving this weekend. giggle

The Dakota Club on Nicolette and 10th has good food and great music.
You could also go to The Loring Cafe which is right across the park from the walker. Eli's (on Hennepin and 15th (?)) is another little hole in the wall that is pretty good. Uptown has plenty of choices as well.
If they are downtown the should really just cruise Nicolette Ave, otherwise known as eat street. Oh, Jerusalem's on Nicolette and 15th has belly dancing on the weekends.

I had fun at Chino Latino and it's in Uptown.

The Loring is no longer there, hasn't been for years. It's Lurcat now. The Loring Pasta Bar and the Kitty Kat Club are both in dinkytown, but that's a bit of a jaunt for them. It's the same owners as the old Loring Cafe.

To answer Anxy, Joe's Garage is right across Loring Park from the Walker. And if it's a nice day, there's no better place to be than their rooftop patio!

Until someone asks, I always forget how many great restaurants we have here.

I think I need to start a dinner club again. I had a sushi club with friends a few years ago, I think I need to start a foodie club where we go out once a month to all the fabulous places around here.

Yeah, I'm in denial about the name change/conversion. I still always call in The Loring. razz
