'Extreme Makeover' house in foreclosure How dumb is this:
'Extreme Makeover' house in foreclosure Clayton County family may lose luxury remodeled home in Lake City A Clayton County family that got the area's first luxury remodeling job from the television show "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" now faces foreclosure, according to television news reports. A foreclosure notice on the home in Lake City appeared last Friday, indicating that a $450,000 second mortgage the owners took out less than 15 months ago was in default, WSB-TV reported. Patricia Harper, the homeowner, told WSB she and her husband had struck a deal with Chase Home Finance to rescue their "extreme" home and that there will be no foreclosure auction. Chase said they couldn't confirm that claim. Harper told WSB they invested the loan proceeds in a construction business and the business hasn't been good. She didn't say how much of the money is left. The home at 5489 Ahyoka Dr. has 5,500 square feet after the 2005 makeover, WGCL CBS46 reported. Lake City mayor Willie Oswalt was among the volunteers who helped build Harper's home 3 1/2 years ago, and Beazer Homes was the main sponsor. The mayor told WSB he is baffled. "Beazer gave them $100,000 cash, paid their mortgage off and they still can't make it," said Oswalt.

That is absolutely ridiculous. How can someone be given a gift like that and then fuck it up?

Ingrates. So, were they given the home for free and then took a mortgage out on it for extra money?

I never understood this show. Take people with no money, struggling and down in their luck and give them massive, ridiculous homes to live in.
Does anyone ever think about how much it costs have a house that huge? How much the utility bills are, etc. I know these folks fucked up big time...but in general, I don't get why they have to make everything so over the top. Just give them a modest house that suits their needs and that they can afford to maintain - not just for the next year but forever.

sounds like they looked that gift horse in the ass and now they are getting kicked.
the mortgage was paid off at 100k and the 2nd one was 450k damn that really sucks, sounds like some real mismanagement and greed took hold, I mean sorry about the business venture but damn how are you going to take all the equity out of the house and just hand it to the bank like that. You never go upside down on a 2nd mortgage. We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color. Maya Angelou

Can the folks they're helping even afford to pay the taxes on these places? (That'll be a huge issue with the home they're building right now in Wisconsin. Property tax rates are very high here.) They build someone a half-million dollar home here and they'll be on the line for somewhere in the neighborhood of ten grand in taxes every year. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

If they paid their mortgage off and gave them money on top of it then they were idiots for getting themselves into that situation.

Exactly! They paid off the mortgage AND gave 'em $100K to boot. They have no mortgage so that $ should go to taxes and utilities. Again, i say, take that shit.

It says that they took the second to start a business. The business didn't do so well.

I always wondered about this stuff. Those houses are worth a fortune, doesn't the government demand taxes on it? And like Erin pointed out, it costs a lot to keep them up, that's why these people lived in run down shacks to begin with. My Legacy

I don't see that as greedy. It's not. And they probably needed the business to be able to afford keeping that house!

Just give them a modest house that suits their needs and that they can afford to maintain - not just for the next year but forever. I've wacthed the show over the years and they've gotten a LOT smarter about this in the last year or so. I saw one show where they built a home for a native american family and the oldest son was a big environmental activist. They made the entire home green with it's own windmill and solar panels so they had NO utility bills, they were able to process rainwater for use, etc. and all the energy they don't use goes back to the grid to help out their community. On other shows, they've had their mortgage paid off and were awarded money in addition (the assumption being, to help pay property taxes in the future). I agree, it's been poorly handled but they've at least tried to improve on it. |

We have an EM home here where I leave Patrick Hughes was the subject of the build. They pay off all the mortgage and give you money in escrow for taxes and stuff, plus you have to undergo financial couseling as well. They really messed up. The utitles in the new homes everything is electric and environmentally freindly as well.
But the nieghbors are pissed becasue now THEIR property taxes have went up becasue of this house in the neighborhood.

So they got a home for free and 100k?
That is some dumb ass people to blow that and still go get 450k on the house and get in trouble. Here is a tip, if these dumb people ask for a loan.....tell em no. Geez i would give a nut for that kind of break.

Life gives you a beautiful home, mortgage paid, 100,000 clams to pay for taxes, utilites. Then you turn around invest it in a risky business considering the current housing market woes..not very smart. Why look a gift horse in the mouth? Enjoy what you get in life.

I don't see that as greedy. Hey ,man you know i love you but i gotta disagree. I started my business with squat, i scrimped and saved, took no wages for a while and did what it took to build from small to less small, and so on and so on. You dont need 450k to start a firm, but you DO need 450k to start a firm if you want new vehicles for it and to keep paying yourself top dollar while it gets off the ground, if you dont wanna cut back on the lifestyle you lead or sacrifice to achieve. It sounds to me like these guys did want it all without the graft. What an opportunity, no mortgage and 100k in the bank to pay for the house while you get your business off the ground. That is a dream. Instead they wanted that AND blew another 450k. Any business man worth anything after the first 100k was blown would have pulled the plug. Simple
