MTV readies 'Rocky Horror' redux

Network to remake 1975 cult classic
By DANIEL FRANKEL

MTV is doing the time warp on a remake of 1975 cult classic "The Rocky Horror Picture Show."

Lou Adler, exec producer of the original film, is partnering with BermanBraun and Fox Television Studios on the new rendition.

Two-hour remake will use the original screenplay by Jim Sharman and Richard O'Brien but may also include music not featured in the original.

Helmer and casting decisions have yet to be announced.

Fox is sin discussions with BSkyB and Sky Movies to co-finance and distribute the telepic abroad.

Timetable for the start of production hasn't been established yet but the partners aim to move forward quickly once the final elements are in place.

"I'd like to see it shown a year from this coming Halloween, but that's up to MTV," Adler said.

BermanBraun principal Gail Berman will exec produce the project along with partner Lloyd Braun. Berman has been attached to a "Rocky Horror" remake dating back to her tenure as Fox programming chief (Daily Variety, July 1, 2002).

The original "Rocky Horror," starring Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick and Meatloaf, has grossed $140 million in domestic box office over the years, primarily from the wallets of youthful audience members who have shown up for midnight screenings over the past three decades.

I think they could improve upon the original in every way save Tim Curry's performance.

But there's no reason, the original is a classic.

Urge to kill rising..rising..

It's a classic - and definitely more than a sum of its parts. However they try and remake it, it'll be bad. And remade for TV? Sweet Jesus....

they could've saved alot of trouble, by keeping the songs from Preminger's version and simply updating the scenery, wardrobe, and slang during the non musical scenes

If it sees the light of day, I will b amazed. Fox has been threatening a Rocky Horror re-make 4 well over a decade now, the last 1 was announced as set in modern times. Dr Frank-N-Furter would b a plastic surgeon as played by Marilyn Manson. REDONK. So, I xpect this 1 2 go the same way.

I think it's a staggeringly stupid idea, but if it encourages folks 2 google local Rocky casts in their own town and see the movie the way it was meant 2 b seen, then I don't mind.

As someone who has done Frank in a shadow cast a few times, and whose life was literally saved by "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" during my teen years, I find this to be tragic indeed. Rocky Horror is VERY personal to me, and I don't like seeing it fucked with. I don't mind some modernization — the recent Broadway revival updated Frank's hair and wardrobe — but a full-on REMAKE? Saw it once. And that's all I really needed. Didn't dislike it, but certainly not as fanatical about it as many. More than anything else, it reminds me of good times. My youth. Lines of people in front of the Varsity Theater, at midnight, dressed like Frank-N-Furter, Riff Raff, Magenta...

Good memories.

There is no reason to remake this film, and MTV knows it. That's why it's bullshit to burn the bread on this. Question; Who's the target audience? Certainly not teens. Teens today can't begin to fuck with this concept. The original play and film were for adults. And young adults in the 70's, I think, were waaay more mature and hip than young adults today. The o.g. is a stone classic. I've seen it MANY times in the movie theatre ever since Jr. High...Who in the hell are they going to get to play Tim Curry's role? Justin Timberlake and shit? People today have NO vision so the casting is going to kill it off before they shoot one frame. Shame on Lou Adler, who I've always been a fan of, for even joining in on this bullshit. Truth be told, they'll be better off to get Quentin or Rob Zombie to cast and direct. I bet the castle that they have way more grasp on what to do with this film for today. I KNOW Rob fucked up the new Halloween but still...The casting is everything to pull this off. And the people who are going to get casted are going to be whack. Their going to make a mockery of the film.

You know it will go down like this:

However many Jonas Bros there are will play Frank as an ensemble.
Miley Cyrus as Janet.
Lindsay Lohan as Riff Raff
ect...

Oh yea, Meatloaf as Eddie.
