Check out this recent thread:
http://prince.org/msg/100/274412?&pg=1 My advice: The Museum of Contemporary Art or the Art Institute. Also, if you want to go to the top of the John Hancock building don't go to the observation deck, go in the main lobby and tell the guards you want to go for a drink at the Signature Lounge on the 96th floor. Be sure to check out the windows in women's bathroom (if you're female). I also really like the architectural boat tours if the weather is nice. Chicago is like a 3-D guide to modern architecture. And vinyl digging on Clark Street. Start just north of Fullerton (HiFi & Dave's) and work your way north to Reckless at Belmont and Broadway(?). If you will be there on the last Sunday of the month, you must go to Prince night at Berlin Night Club! I agree, skip Navy Pier--there's nothing there. It's nothing more than a bunch of crappy "mall" kiosks that sell junk--dreamcatchers and figurines and shit. And there are all sorts of damn kids running around everywhere because I think the Children's Museum is somewhere around there. Plus it's sort of out of the way to get to (unless you take the Chicago Ave bus?). Even the ferris wheel is overrated. My ex- and I went on it a long time ago (when I first moved to Chicago) and it only went around once and that was the entire ride. If you want a nice view of Lake Michigan, go to North Avenue Beach--at least there is a bar on the top of that boat house, or try Oak Street (although that's a bit too pretentious for me), or just north of Diversy Harbor---no bars or anything at Diversy, but you can sit on a little overlook and see downtown Chicago.

Or get some Wrigley's gum! That'd be fun! Hey - maybe Night Ranger will be in town. Now THAT would make a good vacation a GREAT vacation!

Sears Tower is boring. Buddy Guy's is awesome. see it before it closes for good. DO NOT GO TO THE PROJECTS ON THE SOUTH SIDE.
Buddy Guy's Legends? See the enormous projects on the south side. When are you coming? If it's this weekend, there is Prince night and Parliament Funkadelic is playing Saturday night.

I'd recommend Hancock Tower at night but it can be crowded at this time of the year. I'm not mad at you, I'm mad at the dirt.

Ex-Moderator | I"m happy to hear positive responses to the Art Institute. I get in at 6:30am next Thursday and I believe it's walking distance from my hotel. If I can't get an early check-in I'm going to have HOURS to kill. I was thinking about maybe stopping by, now I'll put it on my definite list, whether I get the early check-in or not! |
