Wow. I use to watch the Golden Girls just to see and hear Estelle Getty cracking funny jokes on Betty White. Man, she will be greatly missed.

R.I.P Estelle Getty. You were a wonderful person.

Sophia was my absolute favorite "Golden Girl". Her comedic delivery was priceless!

Let's sing the song one time for Estelle!

Thank you for being a friend
Traveled down the road and back again
your heart is true you're a pal and a confidant

I'm not ashamed to say
I hope it always will stay this way
My hat is off, won't you stand up and take a bow

And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see, the biggest gift would be from me
and the card attached would say,
Thank you for being a friend

Thank you for being a friend
Thank you for being a friend
Thank you for being a friend

RIP Estelle! pray

I have to admit to being a closet Golden Girls fan, she was by far the best character. Sad times.

I am gonna miss her like I really knew her. What comes to mind is that last episode when Dorothy got married and at the end kept going out the door and then coming back. The final time they waited but the door never opened. I would like to think of Estelle Getty in that same way leaving us, And us hoping that door would open again. And because she is dead, If that door did open I would run like I was in grade school. smile

That last episode was sad. They never should have bothered with Golden Palace.

Lifetime will pay tribute to her on Friday with a "Golden Girls" marathon from noon to five p.m. The final episode of the marathon, airing at 4:30 p.m., will be the favorite Sophia-centric episode as voted for by fans at MyLifetime.com.

The poll doesn't seem to be up and running yet

i'm not so much saddened by her death...after all, she was 84...just that some body so funny and so talented, someone who's made me laugh since i was a little kid, will not be around to make me laugh (other than reruns, as usual).

such a shame she had dementia and suffered so much these last years.

she was a one of a kind lady, playing that Sophia Petrillo role as i could never imagine anyone else doing. i'm forever thankful for her existence.

That's what I said in my post above. giggle That would be a great idea!

So nice to see so many people on here saying nice things about Estelle Getty. She probably would have a funny comment for it too, if she didn't pass away from dementia (poor thing).
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Yeah, I'm kind of surprised she lived as long as she did. She'd been ill for so long.

It's leaving Lifetime and moving to Hallmark Channel pretty soon.

omg Really? When? Luckily, I get the Hallmark Channel too, so I'll still be able to catch reruns.

Sorry, I missed this. I looked it up to see when - it's not until March 2009.

No problem. March 2009 is waaay off. I was thinking more like August/September was when The Hallmark Channel would pick the show up. Oh well.

According to Access Hollywood, Lifetime waited until tomorrow to show a Golden Girls marathon in tribute to Estelle Getty because she would have turned 85 tomorrow. She will be sorely missed.

My favorite Sophia episode of "The Golden Girls" was when she befriended that older gentlemen. I think he has Alzheimer's, and eventually had to move out of state to be put into a home. Very very touching episode! mushy
