I want to talk about calling cards...

I know that when you call overseas to a cellphone, the rates that your calling card are charged to way up--but it's still cheaper than going through VONAGE or your phone company (average 29 cents to 32 cents a minute!!! omfg )
On a good calling card, it's about 10 or 11 cents a minute.

However, what if you are calling the local access number from a cellphone (which I discovered you can do), and dialing overseas that way. Are you charged more? Does your cellphone company charge you more? I would imagine your cellphone company sees it as a local phone call only--since you're dialing a local access number that relays to call for you.

Does anyone know how calling cards work?

Do you know any good calling card companies?

Does anybody have pictures of their tits?

I think this is how it works.

You are given a local access number (555-1234) that is a local switching station in your town. You call THAT number. Then a system asks you for your code. You enter the code you're given on the card (or online card), and then you dial the real number you intend to call. Instead of your phone dialing it directly, the switching station (the local access number) you're calling does it. On your phone bill, it appears like you made a local call. So your only expense is the calling card's fees and services.
It normally saves folks a ton of money--the sound quality is not uber great, but if you're calling a lan line over seas, some calls can be as cheap as 1.5 US cents an minute (or less).

But I'm not 100% sure this is really how it works. I just know that on your phone bill, it only shows the local access number (or 1-800 number) you call to make the long distance call.

But I'm also confused if you're calling from a cellphone if the same rules apply. I would imagine so since you're using the local access number as the "Switch". I just don't know. This is new to me. lol

i have an MCI calling card and i love it!

i don't even have a long-distance carrier anymore. used to pay hundreds of dollars for long-distance calls, now i pay 30 dollars every five months or so for 700 minutes of long distance calling. anytime, anywhere in the USA. 3 cents a minute babeee. biggrin

true, the international calls use those minutes up at a greater rate (not sure exactly) but it is still far cheaper.

Can you call from a cellphone without encuring hidden cellphone costs?

I know calling an overseas cellphone cost more but that's different from calling your local access point through your own cellphone.

well, *i* can't because i have a *special* cellphone, which i got through the AAA and is theoretically only for road trips lol

the card works like: i dial the 800 MCI number, punch in my access code, then dial the long-distance number. if i made the call fom my cellphone i would incur the charge for my cellphone usage too.

hope this helps boxed big grin boxed

Skype phones might be an option. Basically, it's the same thing as Skype on your computer--VOIP conversations for free. You just require Internet Access. The beauty of it is that the person you're calling doesn't need to know anything about computers, etc. etc. They just need to join their phone to their network if they require a WEP password.

I'm shipping one to somebody I call frequently because they're laptop is nearly impossible to set up with sound for some reason.

Of course the cheapest option is to just use skype on your computer--it's free, and has video. But it glues you to your computer.

Where you calling a lan line?

If we call a lan line in the UK it's about as cheap. But if we call a cellphone, (most of the folks I know only have cellphones) it's at least 10 cents a minute.

I just checked with my cellphone provider. The only charges you enccur from the cellphone company here in the US is the time you spend on the phone, because your cellphone company only recognizes that you made a local access call to the relay station in your city.

Ergo, it's like calling any old local number. The charges you really encur are throught he calling card plan.

Thus you can call the UK (or whatever country is on your plan) for 10 cents a minute from your cellphone. woot!

I was never able to get calling cards to work for me when I was calling JD regularly, but that was 3 years ago. For some reason the access # was ALWAYS busy and/or wouldn't work calling a cell phone in the UK. It was a nightmare. I finally got a decent plan on my landline, but was still spending $200 a month on phone bills.

Good luck!
