Who's buying an iPhone 3G?

So, the worst-kept secret is out: iPhone 3G, July 11th, $199 with a two-year contract. Who's getting one?

At that price, I think I will. When the iPhone first came out, I decided to wait because I figured they'd eventually drop subsidize the price for people willing to sign a contract, and I also had some concerns about slow data speeds. Both of these issues will be resolved with the 3G version, and the new GPS feature is a nice bonus.

I want one.....

I have the 'old' 8GB.....bought it in Bangkok. Apple's finally introducing the iPhone (3G) here in the Netherlands, now I am not gonna be cool anymore just having the 'old' one.....better get my ass back to Bangkok to buy me a new one!
I don't want to buy one being forced to switch providers.....that's the shit-deal of iPhone/Apple, luckily it is easy to avoid!

8GB for $199, and 16GB for $299. Also, with the 16GB model, you have a choice of black or white.

Unless you leave the country, or are willing to take your chances with an unlocked iPhone, you'll be waiting a long time. smile AT&T has an exclusive deal with Apple for the U.S. market that runs through 2012.

Matt, explain to me the benefits of an unlocked phone. I've never quite understood.

the unlocked iPhone enables you to use it with any simcard/provider, without have to start on a new contract. The iPhones will keep its typycal iPhone-features, the only thing you will have to keep in mind is that you will have to unlock it everytime after you have done a Firmware-update through iTunes. This update will automatically re-lock your iPhone, but thanks to the geeks in the online iPhone-communities you can download software for free after each update to unlock your iPhone!

The Firmware-updates maybe come once every 3 months or so.

So one phone/multiple service providers. I could use ATT as my U.S. carrier; Rogers Mobility as my Canadian carrier, eh? That's cool, I guess.

But I'll still have to use two different phone numbers... that can't be simultaneously accessible, right?

But the iPhone has room for 1 SIM-card only, if that is what you're asking!

I think it's $30/month for data and $40/month for voice, so the whole deal runs you $70/month.

Which is why only Dad is getting the iPhone.
