In the credits on the official site it says "Based on the graphic novel illustrated by Dave Gibbons." Did Alan Moore not want his name associated with it?

I saw this trailer in the theater today and was so jazzed. It seems they really captured the graphic novel wonderfully. The Mars scene looks incredible, and it appears they have Rorschach's mask constantly changing...which makes me very happy.
On another note, it looks like they answered the question of whether or not they would show Dr. Manhattan's penis...by not giving him one.

Right! I'm making one as we speak. it would be groundbreaking. a comic book penis has never been a celebrity before. and a blue one, at that!

ever read the comic? No. I was a huge comic collector back in the day. Was the graphic novel really good? MyeternalgrattitudetoPhil&Val.Herman said "We want sweaty truckers at the truck stop! And honestly, I have no expectation that they're going to be able to pull off a completely satisfying film version that can encompass the non-linear plot and all of the bits and pieces that must be there to lead to the conclusion. If it even comes close, then I'll be happy, but there is absolutely no way to do Watchmen justice on a screen. It's really something. I highly recommend it. Go out and buy the book and read it immediately.

It's really something. I highly recommend it. Go out and buy the book and read it immediately. It's way too dense to be fully captured on film, at least not in one single film. There are a couple things in the trailer that don't seem quite right--the explosive scene where Silk Spectre II is looking bad-ass for one. It looks like the marketers are trying to present it as an action-oriented superhero movie, which is definitely missing the point of the graphic novel. But there are enough scenes in the trailer to show that the filmmakers--if not the people who cut the trailer--have a true love and understanding of the source material. I doubt the movie will come anywere close to capturing the amazing qualities of the graphic novel, but it still looks pretty good to me--certainly not the train wreck it could have been.
