Do you actually believe in marriage?

With so many people getting divorced these days is marriage important anymore. I mean take a look at Kurt russell and Goldie Hawn they have been together over 20 years and have never got married. I think the days of really long marriages are over like our parents and grand parents had in there days. Personally I dont think its a natural thing to be with the same person for so long you naturally are going to get bored. Although dont get me wrong I believe a family environment with a mother and father is the best thing for a child. It might just be the fact that are grand parents put far more effort into there marriages Oh I dont know what do you think???

Yeah. Call me old fashioned and even though my last one ended terribly I still believe in it. I have a much different view of it now though. I also have different expectations about what it should be and what it can do for me.

I believe in it although I don't think its for everyone. I think its a very serious decision that needs to be carefully assessed. I think that couples that decide to do it need to think consider more than just being in love when doing it. As far as divorce-I see those things as having nothing to do with whats going on in one's own backyard. You just can't base your decisions on other people's situations. Let the chips fall where they may. I do think that Kurt Russel and Goldie Hawn have the ideal relationship tho.

I don't have a lot of faith in the institution of marriage only because I don't have a lot of good examples of long lasting, loving marriages. I'm sure I'll meet someone one day to make me feel like we'll beat the odds but until then shrug If someone proposes, great. If they don't, oh well.

ok, i won't be such a debbie downer about it and i'll respect my hetra bruzz and sissies by looking at it in theory:

my best friend is getting married this fall, after over ten years of being with her boyfriend/fiancee/spouse/whateveryacallhim. i think it's awesome. they've basically been a married couple for at least the last five years of their relationship for all intents and purposes, now they're just making it "legal" and enjoying all the benefits that will bring them. neither of them are especially religious, so that's not a big piece of it for them. i think it's important to them because it's a way of establishing their partnership to their families, from parents to siblings to great aunt bertha who nobody sees except on easter, etc.

so in their case, i think marriage is absolutely stunningly perfect. they've taken their relationship on a REALLY long test drive and worked out the logistics before running to the alter, and i respect that marriage is something they're doing AFTER they've figured all that out and made it work.

plus it gives me a chance to drunkenly humiliate my best friend at the reception in front of all our friends, family and loved ones. woot!

I agree. I have my parents, grandparents and several other marriages as examples of long-lasting, largely happy unions. So I know it can work. I just think most people view marriage as disposable. If it doesn't work, get a divorce. When, in a lot of cases a little introspection would prevent that ugliness by never having gotten married in the first place.

Oh...and to answer the question:

Yes I believe in marriage and I have no logical reason why. I just do. I feel the same way about Valentine's Day.

Yes.

It helps with visas and my honeymoon was awesome. Mon is no less tolerable as my wife than she was as my girlfriend and I don't have to worry about shaving, dressing well, earning a steady income etc. anymore. If ever we hit a rough patch I can always come to the org and flirt with everybody.

And even more so divorce material. I've long dreamed of a nasty, protracted break-up with her. She deserves so much more than a quick annulment. mushy

Yes, but both have to be willing to work on the relationship for it to work,
and work towards fulfilling the commitment towards each other.
It's a LOT of work.

I have no right to ask this, but is that how you now feel about your own circumstance?

That's pretty much my take on it. I have about a thousand billion more examples of re;ationships and marriages being tolerable to miserable and I can count on one hand those that are fruitful, rewarding and the kind of marriage I'd want to have.

That said, I still want it. But I've all but given up on the notion it's even possible.
