DIABETIC HELP!!! I wonder if u guys can help me sort out a very heated and lengthy debate!!
My family and I keep having very heated arguements over whether it is all right for diabetics 2 eat sugar and/or anything with sugar in or not!! I say that diabetics need a certain amount of sugar in order for the insulin they take 2 have something 2 work on and my family says that diabetics are 2 have ABSOLUTELY no sugar whatsover!!! We have the same debates over salt as well!! The reason I ask is because my husband always makes a dive for the local Dairy Queen and waffs down a Banana Split or a Waffle Cone Sundae!! And my family said that I should prevent him from doing it!! Can anyone tell me who is right in this case??? Thanks!!! [Edited 7/19/08 3:08am]

OMG are you serious?
He has diabetes and you don't know this stuff? Well first things first it depends what type if diabetes he has and how he controls it. If he injects it also depends on how his control is done, IE via time release insulin or pen type immediate insulin. If it is diet controlled then there are different guides there. Bottom line is that sugar can not be broken down by his body naturally and as such will raise his blood sugar level if not controlled by insulin. He needs to keep his blood sugar level between 4 and 8mmol/l ideally although it will be slightly higher just after he eats and lower in the morning when he wakes. THAT IS THE GOAL If he is lower he needs sugar, if he is higher he needs insulin. IT IS THAT SIMPLE. Get a meter, they are cheap as fuck. Monitor and control with diet and if necessary and he has to do them jabs. IF YOU DON'T HE STANDS THE CHANCE OF DIABETIC COMA AND ALL SORTS OF LONG TERM COMPLICATIONS. [Edited 7/19/08 3:16am]

Knowing is knowing, if you know then opinions mean nothing because you know! That is the medical path right there, what HE says because he wants sweet stuff means fuck all, what your parents say because they think they know means fuck all.

Holy shit...that's dangerous as hell. And Ottensen is right, best to simply get the medical info from your doctor than to ask for advice on the Org (although the advice given so far is sound). Meters are actually offered for free in a lot of cases, but it sounds as if you already have all the normal necessities for controlling things.

[Edited 7/19/08 3:41am] Sounds like tough love time to me. You're the one who's got to live with and care for the repercussions of his decisions

[Edited 7/19/08 3:08am] Im a type 2 diabetic, and I dont eat as well as I should. Sugar is a NO NO I check my sugar level 2x a day. One injection 2x a day (byetta) I always go to the same peeps when it comes to manicures, pedicures and hair coloring. They know who I am, my history and they know they need to be careful with me.I cannot risk getting cuts. [Edited 7/19/08 15:24pm] Say it's just a dream...
