I do not get excited over celebrities. I certainly would not meet or have my picture taken with one that I do not like. They get way too much attention as it is.

Oooh, I thought of another situation that happened to me. My mom and I went on a back stage tour of Radio City Music Hall and they, of course, talk about the Rockettes and show you a dressing room; and then a real live Rockette comes out. (ooh ahh! Efan said: I don't think it's fair to say she compromised her principles when you don't know her well enough to know her politics. Besides, no matter how she feels about the president, it doesn't necessarily apply to the First Lady. And a lot of Americans have immense respect for the office of the presidency, even if they don't for the person holding it.
Yeah, I guess, but I still don't understand how getting a photo taken with someone can be separated from "the office". I mean, take the Pope or Dalai Lama, for example. A lot of people respect their "offices" but I wouldn't get a photo with them either, especially since I'm agnostic. Plus, this happened in the course of her employment, so maybe it's a career move to post it. In my line of work, I've interviewed George Bush (the elder) and Jimmy Carter, one of whom I respect a great deal and one of whom not so much. But I talk about both when I'm promoting my work experience.

Sounds to me like you're a cynic...but trying to pass it off as some sort of moral superiority. [Edited 7/19/08 14:10pm] We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I am a cynic, only I call it being a "realist". Furthermore, I don't apprectiate you accusing me of 'moral superiority.' Unless you've met or talked to me at any length (which you haven't), you have no idea what I think or believe unless I've explicitly explained it here. So to assume that about me is not only incorrect, but insulting as well (not to mention what 'they' say about assuming). ![]()

That's what this entire thread is about. You think you're better than poor, ignorant schlubs like your co-worker, who are too stupid to know that they shouldn't be impressed or excited at meeting people like Laura Bush. Or the president (of any administration). Or the Rockettes, for that matter. The fact that you are "disgusted" with the co-worker for posting pictures of the event proves it. Do I know you personally? Nope. But the things people write speak volumes - even if they don't think they do. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. i don't think it would but i guess it would depend on my line of work.
if it was a part of my job to have my picture taken with famous/important people then i guess i would kind of have to do it. however, since that is not a part of my job my answer would have to be no.

Now considering I work for an arts related, non-profit organization in New York City, there is a good probability that 99% of the people who went are not fans of W. or his administration. He was not at the event, but the First Lady was. I was disgusted to learn that one of my co-workers has posted photos of herself with Laura Bush on her Facebook account. I think this is:
b. beyond hypocritical (because I'm fairly sure this girl is not a W. administration fan). I don't care if it is the First Lady--her husband is the worst US President in recent history and his administration has made a mockery of the Office and wrecked havoc on the "free" world--why would you want your photo taken with her? So Orgers, I ask you:
-for those of you who have, why did you do it? *Mods, please don't move this to P&R--it is not about politics, it is about whether people would hypothetically compromise their principles around celebrities. I could shake the President's hand which of course someone would take a picture but I would not pose in a hug or handshake to suggest likeability, endorsement, or making nice. I would try to get out of a group photo but as a team, I would take the picture because there is no I in team. Plus a team shot doesn't mean I have to talk to him or shake his hand. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

Nope I wouldn't. As an example, I went with my boss(who is also my close friend) to a Bret Micheals concert close to where we work. Now I am not a fan of his or Poison, but she is. I found out there was going to be an after party in Seattle and bought us tickets not telling her because I wanted it to be an early birthday suprise.
We went to the concert, which was fun watching her have a blast. Then went to the after party, where he was there taking pictures with the fans and signing autographs. We waited in line, finally it was her turn. She got her ticket signed, I took her picture with her camera and mine. Her gave her a big hug and thanked her for coming to the show. I shook his hand, thanked him for his performance and was getting ready to walk off when he asks...." Don't you want a picture with me?" I looked at him smile and said...."No thanks,I'm good but thank you anyway". He looked like this It isn't the load that breaks us down, it's the way we carry it.
