I'm sure he still loves the game of football, but for about the last five years, he's been telling everyone that he wants to retire only to change his mind sometime during the offseason. Part of this is not wanting to go through the motions of training camp, which I could understand for a veteran player who is not in danger of losing his position on the team, (Michael Strahan did the same thing with the New York Giants, and LaDanian Tomlinson of the San Diego Chargers basically sits out the entire preseason.) The real issue is that Brett Favre told the Packers that he was done for good in March, and the Packers went through the whole retirement ceremony with him and made plans to move on without him. Now Favre changes his mind around Memorial Day and says he wants to come back and play football, but he waffles around and says that he wants to stay retired two weeks later only to change his mind again two days later. All this drama makes the Packers organization look like ungrateful assholes, but in reality they're trying to protect themselves from having Favre coming back into training camp and then deciding two weeks into the preseason that he really doesn't want to play football anymore.

As for the Packers not releasing Brett Favre, they've already made plans to move on with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback, and when they say that he can come back as a backup, they're betting on him wanting to stay retired. In order for Favre to come back to football, he has to send a formal letter to the NFL commissioner requesting reinstatement into the league, which he has not done yet. If he does come back, they will have to pay him $12 million dollars just to sit on the bench, unless they decide to release him, which the Packers have no intention of doing because they don't want him to end up playing for the Minnesota Vikings or Chicago Bears, even though both teams need him badly.

I don't blame Favre at all for changing his mind and deciding to play. He's entitled to that. I also don't blame the Packers for deciding to move forward with Rodgers as the starter and saying we're not going to release you outright and let you sign with whomever you wish.

The biggest bullshit in all this is Ted Thompson suggesting that Favre is welcome back as a backup. That, in no way, reflects what is in the "best interest of the Green Bay Packers". The fact is, Aaron Rodgers is going to fuck up this season. He's, technically, not a rookie, but in terms of playing time he's very much one and the fuck-ups are going to come. Can you begin to imagine what the fan response is going to be the first time Rodgers craps away a game at Lambeau with the living legend Favre sitting on the bench? It would do untold amounts of damage to his confidence to have that situation to deal with.

Not to mention how do you get the buy-in from vets who have established relationships with Favre busting their asses each weekend with the 2nd best quarterback on the field?

Nah, Thompson doesn't really want any part of that.

The best thing for Green Bay would be to trade him and get whatever value they can out of some QB desperate team willing to overpay to put butts in seats with a marquee name like Favre's.

It's not as poetically idiotic as Chris Henry getting arrested while wearing his own jersey, but this one's in the same neighborhood.

Remember those tampering charges that the Packers filed against the Vikings? And remember how I thought it would be difficult for the Packers to prove that Favre had made inappropriate contact with the Vikings?

Well, that assumed that Brett Favre wasn't using a Packers-issued cell phone to make those calls to the Vikings. As it turns out, Favre may have done exactly that.

...Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel had an interesting bit of information in a piece he wrote about the quarterback today.

McGinn writes that a source said Favre had continued to use a Packers-issued cell phone and that when the team checked the phone records it found “repeated calls to coach Brad Childress and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell.”

The possibility of Favre having used a phone issued by the Packers had been speculated on last week after the Associated Press reported that Green Bay informed the NFL it felt “an investigation of the phone records would show more than ‘normal contact’ between the Vikings and Favre, even before he formally asked for his release to play for another team.”

In fairness to Favre, it should be mentioned that any phone calls he made to the Vikings were made in a gunslinging fashion, and through the entire conversation, he looked like a kid out there, just having fun.

Say this turns out to be true, and tampering by the Vikings can be proved. And say that the Packers do what they're expected to do, and block Favre from playing for the Vikings. Favre could end up costing the Vikings draft picks and fines while never playing a down for them, while also putting the Packers in this miserable position.
