Interesting thread here. I know for myself my flow is too darn heavy because of PCOS for a tampon. I have them only for when I'm taking a shower. Plus they make my cramps even worse than they normaly are. Just Call Me Afrochick

Isn't anything personal anymore?? Why should this be private? How does one find out about something without asking around. None of my close friend use tampons for the same reasons I don't and the only family member who does is my sister and we don't talk like that. She's one of "those" women

I had tamponphobia first when I was in 5th grade and learning about the different kinds of female products out there. It seemed easier to just put on a pad and go about my business. So finally my period comes in 7th grade. I used pads mainly because I thought tampons would hurt. And also unlike most girls my age, I hadn't...discovered or explored my own self. This didn't happen until well..around age 18. In high school I tried using a tampon one day and it hurt like hell. I'm not sure what I did, but I know it was wrong. Tampons aren't supposed to hurt when you use them. You aren't even supposed to feel them. Soo..randomly one day about 2 years ago (I'm 22.5) I decided to try tampons.
I LOVE THEM!! The fear is basically based on the stuff we're more than likely taught as younger girls. The teacher I had barely touched on tampons. It was pads pads pads with her. That whole thing with TSS didn't help much, either. It scared me good. Like, if I didn't use a tampon right to the nines, I'd die instantly. I only use pads now for bedtime. Other than that, I prefer tampons. They're not as obvious, anyway.

JasmineFire said: Janfriend said: Doesn't it break the hymen? I actually don't think it does. Unless you have a dildo sized tampon, and that would just be impractical. However, gymnastics, horseback riding, ballet...basically anything that requires a women to spread her legs may break the hymen before sexual intercourse. But then again, it may not. It depends on the woman. The presence or absence of a hymen does not indicate virginity. My hymen broke falling out of a tree when I was little. And it's a damn good thing hymens AREN'T measures of sexual status, because otherwise I'd have to tell people I lost my virginity to a maple when I was 7. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

The oldest printed medical document, papyrus ebers, refers to the use of soft papyrus tampons by Egyptian women in the fifteenth century B.C. Roman women used wool tampons. Women in ancient Japan fashioned tampons out of paper, held them in place with a bandage, and changed them 10 to 12 times a day. Traditional Hawaiian women used the furry part of a native fern called hapu'u; and grasses, mosses and other plants are still used by women in parts of Asia and Africa. Tradtionally, women in my ancestral tribes (woodlands Cree) would used dried moss held on with sort of a soft leather belt. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

I wore pads the first 3 or 4 times I had my period, but after that it was tampons for me. My periods are light enough I never have to wear liners. I'm still paranoid about leaks though, so on danger days I just wear dark pants and undies. Problem solved. ;thumbsup:
I prefer OB tampons. Less garbage. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"
