Most "plus-size" models are what would be considered normal-sized women. The ones we use are generally a size 12.

She was a 12 in 1950s sizes - which translates to about a 6 today.

There's been a liiiiittle bit of size "inflation" over the years. lol

eek Really? How the heck did they change sizes so drastically? Still, by today's standards most models are a 0-2 which is definitely not representative of real women.

In America, yes lol...but we Americans tend to be "plus sized" to the rest of the world. I never really thought there was any truth to that stereotype until I spent two weeks in a foreign country three different times (one for 10 days, one for 12 days, and another for 10 days). When I got back, it seemed like everybody I saw was "plus sized" lol...it was a weird feeling, and made me understand why we have that reputation.

It's called Vanity Sizing.

Claiming that someone who wears 0-2 is not a real woman is silly. Women come in all shapes and sizes.

Just because there is a majority of women in North America that are larger (fatter), doesn't mean they are more of a woman.

rolleyes Ummmm, that's not what I meant, I meant real women as in average women as opposed to "supermodels." Most women on the street in most developed countries are larger than a 0-2.

It's true, though. The best way to explain it is by looking at the difference between ready-to-wear and sewing patterns. While ready-to-wear clothing sizes have changed over the years...pattern sizes haven't. They're still based on sizing that was devised in the 1940s. At that time, the pattern companies realized an opportunity to make their sizes uniform across brands. They took advantage of the fact that a lot of women were affiliated with the armed services, got the measurements of a lot of women all at once, and did their sizing based on those measurements.

Pattern sizes have stayed exactly the same since then. If you sew, you know that you cannot buy a pattern in your "off the rack" size. There is a two-size difference - size 12 pattern corresponds to an 8 in ready-to-wear, an 8 is a 4, and so on.

All these "plus size" models are very beautiful. I just don't get the models that are so thin they look sick.

I believe that everyone has their ideal weight, whether it be larger or smaller, and when at or around that weight, they look and feel their best.

This is what I found on Snopes about Marilyn's dress size.

http://www.snopes.com/mov...mdress.asp

We can at least establish a range of measurements for Marilyn Monroe based on the available sources:

Height: 5 feet, 5½ inches
Weight: 118-140 pounds
Bust: 35-37 inches
Waist: 22-23 inches
Hips: 35-36 inches
Bra size: 36D

A woman of Marilyn's height, at the extreme of Marilyn's weight range (140 lbs), would probably wear a size 12 dress today (which is the same dress size listed for Marilyn in the book The Unabridged Marilyn). Perhaps at one time she did wear dresses that might have been considered size 16 (or even 18) back in the 1950s, but she almost certainly did not wear dresses equivalent to today's size 16. This is borne out by citings such as the following (which might also be a source of some confusion,as a British size 16 would be the equivalent of an American size 12):

[The Times, 1994]
Even the 1950s mannequin does not have a totally unattainable figure. She has a wasplike waist, but her shoulders and hips are femininely broad. She resembles that universal sexual icon, Marilyn Monroe a dress of whose was recently auctioned and found to be a British size 16.

An American size 0-2 doesn't translate to the same size in other countries. Again, it's all about vanity sizing. Sizes are bigger with a smaller size number.

Absoultely more women on the streets are bigger than a size 0-2 but average doesn't mean better. Unfortunately, in North America, average means fatter.

According to snopes.com : http://www.snopes.com/mov...mdress.asp

based on her documented measurements, height, weight, etc.

"A woman of Marilyn's height, at the extreme of Marilyn's weight range (140 lbs), would probaly wear a (US) size 12 dress today."
