JustErin said: KidaDynamite said: I don't stay out in the sun so that takes care of that. Plus I don't really get tan's so that's another reason for me to stay away from the sun. It is recommended that you get 10-15 minutes of pure sun exposure a day. That's without any sunblock. The sun is good for you. Sunburns and extended periods in the sun are not. "...In summer, a fair-skinned person at the beach should get all the vitamin D they need in about five minutes. That’s the amount of time it takes the skin to turn slightly pink. Be careful: pink skin increases risk of skin cancer. "That’s why Andrews prefers his patients get their vitamin D from other sources. Fleischner suggests it is OK to take a 30-minute walk three times a week during sunlight hours, as long as the walker uses sunscreen with a protection value of 15. Other good sources of vitamin D include fortified milk and fortified orange juice, a multivitamin, cod liver oil or tablets, and fatty fishes such as salmon, herring and sardines." http://www.delawaretoday....Vitamin-D/

Ex-Moderator | Oh - And here's a story of me and the sun. The first day of Lollapalooza I put spf 45 sunblock on 30 minutes before leaving the hotel (so it was good and soaked in), stayed in the shade as much as possible, reapplied while outside, and was in direct sunlight probably a total of 2-3 hours the whole afternoon and when we went back to the hotel in the late afternoon/early evening to rest a bit before the evening activities I had to change clothes to cover as much skin as possible as I was sunburned already.
I get burned within 10-15 minutes in direct sunlight if I don't have anything on. I wear spf 30 on my face every single day year-round. I even have to put it on the part in my hair if I'm going to be outside for any length of time or my scalp there will burn. The sun and me are not friends. I'm best avoiding it altogether. |

Serious said: Anyway I cannot imagine that you need any sun protection in NYC. When I was there in June it was raining all the time, but I would have never used any even if it would have been damn hot.
Well speaking as someone who was a lifeguard at outdoor pools for 8 years, I will say that you can still get burned on an overcast/cloudy day. UV rays are the ones that give you a "tan" and they are not blocked by clouds--so in fact, tanning on a cloudy day is better b/c the clouds block out all the 'useless' sunshine and you only get the good stuff! And in the winter too--especially if there is a lot of snow--it reflects the sun and makes it more intense. Why do you think snowskiers always come back with burnt faces? In high school/college I used to think you could never be too dark--I would put tanning oil on my legs, SPF 4 on my torso, and 15 on my face. My nose would get so sunburned by the end of the summer it would be peeling and raw (gross!). I've also had 2nd degree sunburns (2nd degree=blisters), and spent a good amount of time in tanning beds. I still like to have a littel color, but I hardly have time to lay out now...only on the weekends and that's if the weather is nice. I go in spurts wearing the sunscreen. I know I should wear it every day, but lately I haven't been. If I know I am going to be outside all day I do. Oh and to answer the original question: not a fan of "farmer's tan" lines, (my dad always has them--he's a farmer! lol.) but swimwear tan lines don't bother me as long as they're not visible. Nothing says tacky like wearing a shirt with one kind of straps and being able to see your tan lines. spend/spent edit [Edited 8/27/08 11:20am]

PS. I know tanning (in excess) is bad, but I don't really have any other horrible vices so I sort of feel entitled to do one thing that's bad for me. And like I said, I really don't tan much at all anymore.
I am a little worried about those 8 years of lifeguarding, plus the years before that when I was a pool rat, but my face doesn't look like a leather handbag, so that's good. Whew! And I do make sure to look for any new freckles and that the ones I have don't change color/shape.

"“What people take for granted on a daily basis, among so many other things, is their skin. I spent my life, like many others, catching some rays, surfing, hanging out in the sun and it never bothered me until now. Who knew that something as simple as a proper sunscreen or keeping yourself covered up on a sunny day could one day save your life? Our culture looks at a nice tan as a sign of luxury. We spend time in tanning booths when we can’t go to the beach or lay by the pool. It’s time to think again. Especially if you’re fair skinned, have freckles, or light eyes. Be aware of the dangers, take precaution, and have yourself checked out regularly by a dermatologist from head to toe. It could absolutely make the difference in your life.” - Danny Federici, 2007 Danny died from melanoma just a few months after penning this statement.

Okay fine, I'll stop with the tanning and take up smoking and cocaine. More expensive habits *and* bad for you! Double the danger! (I don't know who this Danny dude is, but I do wear sunscreen when I lay out, and I don't have light eyes/fair skin so....) Anyway, the way I see it is I could get hit by a bus crossing the street, die in my sleep, get cancer from any number of things, have a frickin' building fall on me, etc. etc. so what's the use of worrying about it? Maybe my fate is skin cancer, maybe not. I think when your time is up, it's up. I don't really believe in death negotiation so it is what it is. . [Edited 8/27/08 11:13am]

But I hardly ever get a sunburn either, my skin just hardly reacts to the sun at all. So I don't lay in the sun as it doesn't make any sense.
