has anyone lived in a house/place that was HAUNTED?

so i'm not saying my new house is (where i'm living during the school year with 3 other girls - so far so good thanks for asking biggrin )

... but one of my room mates was telling me of a night she came home from a night at the bar, and she came in and the house smelled of french fries (the others were out with her and had been with her all day) lol
then, as she's going up the front staircase in the house (we have two staircases because the house is that big) the smoke detector just starts blaring out of nowhere, nothing's in the oven, nothing's cooking, nothing's on fire, it's a new smoke detector...
so we just assumed that the circuits fucked up or something...
then, she's on one side of the hallway and the light in the bathroom on the other side flashes on (it's a sensor light, no switch) and goes off - but it can't really do that, it stays on for 10 minute intervals shrug
and then flashes on again and off again within seconds...

i mean really, the skeptic in me says it's just the way the house is wired - it's an old house so anything can really be explained by age shrug

but i mean it's a huge house for just the 4 of us (2 and a half living rooms, 4 bedrooms - mine having a full balcony - an attic big enough to house another person...this place is fucking huge) so it's kinda scary staying here alone - like i am now neutral

and i'm kinda freaked out because the spiritual in me says anything is possible and to not doubt the happenings... smudge the house (burn some sage) and hope the best...
i'm just keeping an eye on things - burning incense n stuff, playing music to keep myself from freaking out

....i just know the rude skeptics are going to run in this thread and tear it down rolleyes

but as a serious question: have any of you lived somewhere that was deemed haunted? how did you deal with it? how did you react, did you even see anything strange happening?

Don't worry too much Sammy....just someone letting u know they are there is all hug
I've lived in a house with a spirit before...I know it sounds weird but I used to walk around the house talking out loud when I was at home on my own because I knew he was there and when a friend of mine stayed with me once she was in the livingroom napping on the sofa and he rubbed her leg....she jumped up screaming and came running into the kitchen where me, my mother and another friend of ours were having lunch
We all laughed and told her he must really like her...she didnt think we were very funny lol
But otherwise he was fairly passive...just used to move things from where u had put them and place them somewhere else.

My son keeps seeing a "lady" in the house we bought 6 months ago. He hasn't mentioned her in a while though. I used to work in a pub that had a ghost we used to hear the footfall upstairs when we are all in the kitchen.

The sorority house I lived in during college has a ghost. I never saw her when I was living there...but a lot of other women have over the years. She seems to be most often seen in a few rooms of the house - and only in the "old" part of the house which was built in the 1870s (as opposed to the "new" part of the house, which was built in the 1960s).

She appears most frequently during times of high stress in the house - during exams, for example. And she's a totally benevolent presence - she has never frightened or freaked anyone out.

At some point in time, she was given the name "Martha."

yes i did. our family home for 20 years. the weirdes things used to happen.
most prominent would be in the bathroom when you would be in the bath or at
the sink, splashing water in your face.

usually, like 3 or 4 times a month the light would dim or just go out right
when your face was covered in soap and you had to rinse

lol

talk about bad timing. you'd be standing there at the sink, splashing water
in your face and the light would buzz, go out and the room would go icecold
in just seconds and right then you'd have this horrible sensation of a hand
being pushed into your back. it scared me senseless half the time.

when in the bath the same thing would sometimes happen and you could feel a
cold wind picking up in the closed room

eek

the cellar was scary as fuck too. the whole thing was very big, tiled with
nice white tiles and white walls. not scary looking at all. we used to have
a large playroom with lots of toys there when my brother and me were young.
we even had a traintrack running through it etc.

same thing used to happen there. the light would flicker and all your hair
would stand up at the back of your neck and you'd actually feel someone in
your surroundings. i can't tell you how many times i literally ran up the
stairs touching only one or two sports.

when alone in the house things got worse and worse as time progressed and
in the end when my parents and brother were out i'd end up sitting in the
garden, even in the middle of winter with snow falling because i was too
scared to go back inside.

first time i spent an evening and best part of a december night out in the
garden was when i was on the downstairs toilet, no one else in the house
but me and our dog and someone came down the stairs. i opened the door in
the hallway whilst i sat on the bowl lol and there was no one on the stairs
but still the sound of descending footsteps was there. i just pulled up my
pants in mid pissing hahaha and ran out into the garden with the dog.

sat there in a tshirt and wet pants on a bench at the far end of the garden
in -2 celcius for 5 hours until my parents got back home.

you'd see shades of people moving across the wall or catch something in a
corner of your eyes which would be gone as soon as you turned your head.

several times i woke up at night with a man sitting either next to my bed
or at the foot end. he looked like someone from 18th century france with
long black flowing hair and a slim moustache. he wouldn't disappear when
you'd look at him. and i was too affraid to move or scream.

only after about 15 years of thinking i was probably insane i finally did
confide in my mother who started to cry hysterically and confessed that
she had felt and seen the exact same thing, including a detailed portrait
of the man i used to see in my room.

my parents had been trying to sell the house for 15 years with no luck or
with something always throwing a spanner in the works like a strange kind
of illness or unexplainable things happening to deals falling through.

we really had the feeling that the house/thing didn't want us to leave at
all.

then we found out that the people who had built the house had only lived
in it for 4 months before selling it to the people who then sold it to
us (after living there for 6 months).

turns out the woman from the original family who built the house never
stayed in it alone. from the first day it was ready she got the creeps.
when her husband took their son to school (a 10 minute drive) she would
run out into the street in her robe and wait across the street until he
would come back. that's how scared she got when being alone in there.

her husband took her to spain to relax on holiday and told her he would
sell the house. only he didn't. during the holiday he told her that he
wanted her to give the house another try and she then tried to jump off
the balcony on the 4th floor of their hotel out of fear of having to go
back to that house

eek eek

when we finally did get to leave the house a young couple bought it and
they were very adamant about not ever wanting kids and just living for
their carreers.

i immediately told my mom "that's not gonna happen, the house wants to
have people in it. mark my words, something will 'go wrong' and she'll
be pregnant before the end of the year".

4 months later she was pregnant. immediately after the first child she
was pregnant again.

i sometimes walk past it with my dog but i always cross the street as
i get closer. that young couple seem to leave the house every chance
they get as they are never at home with their kids, not even on the
weekends. instead they spend every waking minute with her parents.

now, i'm not a strong believer in any of this stuff and i'm not sure if
i should even write this but what the heck.

once you've seen doorhandels being pulled down and doors opening. have
a strange apparition sit on your bed or feel a wind pick up in a closed
unvented room, hear people walking up and down an empty hallway or on
the stairs i guess you're pretty much beyond the point of denying it.

Sometimes when I'm about to fall asleep I hear a little girl and woman talking to one another. I can't make out what they're saying. Sometimes they're crying. I think we're able to hear these things more when we're going to sleep because our mind is shutting down and we're more willing to hear them. We don't have enough energy to tell ourselves it's NOT happening.

Didn't you tell me that he specifically says that she's barefoot? That's pretty specific. I find it fascinating.

I have volumes and volumes of family ghost stories. My cousins lived in a haunted house. There were apparitions, sounds and everything else involved with hauntings. I wish they still lived there so that we could invite Ghost Hunters. They stuck it out for over 30 years. The only reason they moved was because my cousin (he was like my brother) died on the property.

The tennants that live there now have experienced many things.

My ex-roommate says that I have a little girl living in my house. I have never seen her but I know she moves things.

you'd see shades of people moving across the wall or catch something in a
corner of your eyes which would be gone as soon as you turned your head.

several times i woke up at night with a man sitting either next to my bed
or at the foot end. he looked like someone from 18th century france with
long black flowing hair and a slim moustache. he wouldn't disappear when
you'd look at him. and i was too affraid to move or scream.

only after about 15 years of thinking i was probably insane i finally did
confide in my mother who started to cry hysterically and confessed that
she had felt and seen the exact same thing, including a detailed portrait
of the man i used to see in my room.

my parents had been trying to sell the house for 15 years with no luck or
with something always throwing a spanner in the works like a strange kind
of illness or unexplainable things happening to deals falling through.

we really had the feeling that the house/thing didn't want us to leave at
all.

then we found out that the people who had built the house had only lived
in it for 4 months before selling it to the people who then sold it to
us (after living there for 6 months).

turns out the woman from the original family who built the house never
stayed in it alone. from the first day it was ready she got the creeps.
when her husband took their son to school (a 10 minute drive) she would
run out into the street in her robe and wait across the street until he
would come back. that's how scared she got when being alone in there.

her husband took her to spain to relax on holiday and told her he would
sell the house. only he didn't. during the holiday he told her that he
wanted her to give the house another try and she then tried to jump off
the balcony on the 4th floor of their hotel out of fear of having to go
back to that house

eek eek

when we finally did get to leave the house a young couple bought it and
they were very adamant about not ever wanting kids and just living for
their carreers.

i immediately told my mom "that's not gonna happen, the house wants to
have people in it. mark my words, something will 'go wrong' and she'll
be pregnant before the end of the year".

A year or so ago, with a big big decision on my mind, i suddenly woke up in bed one night. I could feel the presence of a strong lady stood by the bed. I couldnt see her but i could feel her. She was very comforting and just there to he help me make my mind up. It reminded me of both my grandmother and aunt who have all passed away.
