I always wondered what he thought of this:
I remember when this first aired, I was watching it with my mom and we were just the whole time. I do hope that he rests in peace and my heart goes out to his family. However, I don't agree with his politics at all. Is he the senator with the "secret" biracial love children all over the south?

You mean the above posts? I suppose it is just a reflection on what mark he had on people's lives with his remarks about certain groups of people.

you're probably thinking of Strom Thurmond. i remember when the Dalai Lama met with Jesse Helms - hard to imagine two more different people, sitting down to talk.

He had a "secret" daughter. The woman was underaged when she got pregnant with his child. Stat. rape. SC's senator.....even has a high school named after him. He opposed civil rights and was a segregationist.....but later on claimed his views were different His daughter has a book out about the whole ordeal. I was kinda happy when shit hit the fan here. looking for you in the woods tonight Switch FC SW-2874-2863-4789 (Rum&Coke)

May he rest in peace. Maybe now he'll realize that he was wrong to preach so much hate. MyeternalgrattitudetoPhil&Val.Herman said "We want sweaty truckers at the truck stop! He was a Senator from North Carolina. A fairly representative example of him: Often he was the lone voice of dissent in a Senate of 100 often like-minded members. He fought his Republican colleagues as often as his Democratic counterparts. He was the only senator to vote against confirming Henry A. Kissinger as secretary of State during the Nixon administration and Frank C. Carlucci as secretary of Defense during the Reagan presidency. And he was the only senator to vote against making the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday a national holiday. His lone dissent came only after he conducted a 16-day filibuster against the King holiday, during which Helms took to the Senate floor to decry the assassinated King, a pacifist and beloved civil rights leader, for his "action-oriented Marxism."
