I just got back from a trip to Hearst Castle in San Simeon, CA - I did tour #1 and tour #3, and had a thoroughly enjoyable and peaceful experience, despite the smoke/haze from the CA fires. I recommend that anyone who's going take more than 1 tour in a day - not only is it like taking a big step back in time, the castle probably has the most ecclectic collections ever assembled in history. MTV Cribs can't do it like this, people.

I live somewhat near Hearst Castle (2-3 hours away) and I've never been. I've seen pix and it looks beautiful. I want to go when Patty Hearst makes a visit.

I've been on whichever tour shows the pools (my father took me)...They are insane.

Hearst is just now being recognized for his collection ability, and unlike the Getty museum, I learned, made all his acquisitions legally. Doing the research before calling what you see kitsch will help, though.
