As some of you know, I'm from the UK, and I had a trip booked to travel around the west coast of the US for 4 weeks in September, LA, SF and Vegas, and maybe Mexico. Well my plans have changed slightly and now I am looking for suggestions I am meeting friends coming from New Zealand but they have changed their plans so that they get to LA a week later - leaving us only 3 weeks.

So my question is this: Do I also change my flight and spend only 3 weeks travelling with them, or do I look at flying to LA on the original date, then spending a week somewhere else, like the east coast, on my own? Any suggestions or websites would be appreciated Especially geared to single female traveler!

I really want to go to Boston for a week but I'm just trying to figure out A if I can afford it and B if there is anything else that I am missing out on, like a couple of days in say Chicago or New York! I don't know how I am going to pay for this

you might just rent a car and drive up to Yosemite and/or Lake Tahoe, if not already planned with your friends.

@ Yosemite I remember The Apple Tree Inn to be quite okish in pricing and the setting is amazing. I'd settle for a week alone there anytime, just to get the batteries charged.

You might also spend some time visiting orgers

Oh and also, what is a realistic figure for how much I will spend in an average big city in the US, daily, on a budget - $50? that includes hostel accommodation...

Fuggeddabout the East Coast, Chigaco & such.....fly west, get a car and do a roadtrip! You're going 4 weeks, that should be planty of time!
Go to the Canyon, maybe even Monument Valley. Lake Tahoe indeed, Yosemite. Along the coast: Route 101 is beautiful, Carmel, Big Sur (if it's still there after the bushfires). San Francisco is a must, LA is goofy fun!
Arizona.....breathtaking.....

$50 a day is not realistic unless you plan to find somewhere you can stay for free or not do anything that costs money other than eat, I'm afraid. I suppose it could be done, but definitely not in New York or Boston.

When are you coming? I've got a couch you can crash on if you want to see Mpls.

oops, I just saw September... that could be doable... I was planning to travel away this year in the fall but my car was just totaled and I'm going to have to buy a new one. So I could use some of that vacation time to show you around.
