opossum in my dryer! so i'm laying in my bed reading a very very good book,
and i hear a loud yell coming from the utility closet where my washer and dryer are kept... its my younger MALE cousin and he's ranting on about some THING being in the tubey thing of our dry (sry i dont speak mechanics) anyway..i jump on the dryer to take a look and sho' nuff there's a opossum gnarling its teeth at me... its midnight...MIDNIGHT i dont have time for this. So i call animal control..they can't come out unless my maintenance people call for help, so i call the maintenance people and they can't get out here until 7am. there is no way in Hades i'm going to stick my hand in there to get it out.... HEEEEELP

What would happen if you turned the dryer on for just a couple of seconds? Seems like that would encourage it to leave in a hurry.

um don't do that If all else fails. Probably would try a loud noise like a vacuum or something first. The thought of getting bit and rabies, ick. But hey, she got it out, no one harmed, congrats! [Edited 6/18/08 23:17pm]

HEEEEELP Oh fuck no don't even touch it! Those things look like vaccum cleaner sized rats to me. Although it's rare, some DO carry rabies (usually from an altercation with another infected animal), and if you mess with them they WILL attack. I used to live in South Florida where they are rampant, and they do this horrible little battle dance where they stand on their hind legs and start gnarling at you before they attack and start gnawing and scratching. I can't believe the maintaince people wouldn't come out to get that out of your house. More unbelieveable is that animal and pest control has to wait for maintanence to give them the go ahead to come out and remove it? What kind of BS is that? . God forbid the little fucker would be carrying something infectious, and then they would just leave you guys in a lurch like that?

HEEEEELP No effing way would I even attempt to get that thing out of there. I would have left it's ass in the dryer until some other idiot came to take care of it. I do not like scary, wild creatures. I would have left it in there and blocked the door! Even though I know it couldn't open a dryer door I still would have blocked it. And I doubt I would have been able to sleep.

well luckily for me it was hiding in the
metalish tubing of the dryer (which was no longer connected to the dryer nor the wall) so i felt safe enough to jump on the washer. then i got the ice chest opened it up and used the stick side of the broom to lift the tube thing up till he fell out...then gradually i worked his lil bad ass into the chest and closed it. on my way to releasing him back out..i'm walkin down the sidewalk..i see the silhouette of this big dog sized furry thing and i see it sit up on its hind legs i look back and my cousin is just walkin away lol so i followerd his cue. i'm sure glad it was a small opossum rather then that big one i saw..

(which was no longer connected) my cousin usually cleans it out when they use leaf blowers outside like the did yesterday punk ass is lucky he didnt get bit

The best thing to do when an opossum, squirrel, raccoon etc gets in your place is to open a window, lean a broomstick up to it then leave closing off the room. It will leave on it's own once it realizes that you're gone and not gonna hurt it. A terrified animal is not going to try and leave. But once they feel safe, they crawl up the broomstick to the window and voila - they're gone. No contact was needed to remove it.
Believe me, once they find out that they are that close to humans they want out as much as you want them out.

Those things look scary! i work at a vet hospital i do have my rabies shots...that wouldn't make things easier but i deal with some pretty bad unsocialized dogs and cats at work. i've felt much more threatened with feral cats then i did with this opossum lol
