My kids have attended and marched in Gay Pride parades, and rolled in them when they were little enough to need strollers. The one in Boston always has an awesome kids' area with face painting, balloons, etc.

my ex is half mexican and speaks fluent spanish and looks totally white. he would chuckle when we'd go into places around town and people would make comments in spanish about us. if he was really feeling playful he'd say something to them in spanish and the look on their faces were priceless.

My oldest brother does that. He's black, but knows Spanish fluently.

I do understand. The parade is about being free, about being open. Perhaps it is good because it puts the issue in peoples' minds, faces, and in a fun way.

I only raise the question out of honesty.

why should we have to worry about others thoughts about us. people should mind their own business.

um, it's a parade! lol

But I certainly agree that you shouldn't have to worry about what others think.

I'm not saying what anyone should or shouldn't do. A parade is meant to be festive & over the top. A bunch of gay people walking reservedly down the street in their work clothes wouldn't be much fun, certainly.

But I still think that it may confirm some folks' worst fears.

Fuck 'em. Seriously. If you're someone whose "worst fears" include people who happen to be homos, then I'm not going to make you feel any better with a parade, no matter what I do with it. So in the meantime, I'll have a blast with the people I love the most. When I identified as a lesbian and dated women exclusively, the joy and freedom I felt in gay-only and gay-positive environments is something I could never explain to you. PRIDE is a celebration of that, and people who are outsiders to that community are not a concern. Their fears are going to have to be their own problem to deal with. It is not the responsibility of the oppressed to soothe the oppressor.

Well, considering you can practically see people fucking each other on t.v. commericals about deodorant, I'm not worried about my kids seeing something inappropriate at pride.

Not directed at you, Raha, but I never see threads on the Org about chicks flashing their tits at Spring Break or Mardi Gras. confused

You know what I'm talking about. What about the Vicwhoria Secret commericals? Those AXE commercials. They even talk about sex on those. You ever see the one where the lady wants the guy to put some oil on her back? Her ass is practically showing.

Most pride parades are, to me, about as provocative as a music video. If you replaced all the participants with hot chicks in bikinis, it would barely raise an eyebrow.

There seems to be an attitude among some people who think they're comfortable with gay people that they're fine with gay people as long as they don't have to think about our icky sex lives. But we don't just want the right to love someone; our sex lives are part of the deal too. I know some people who love the gays as long as we're making them laugh but as soon as the messiness of our whole personaes enters the picture, it makes them uncomfortable. Personally, I think that's more homophobic than what the religious right believes. At least I know where I stand with them. The blurry distinctions that some so-called progressives make are more offensive to me. (I'm not directing this at anybody here; I just thought it worth noting in the context of this conversation.)

You mean like 96% of Will & Grace fans? It's all cool when the screeching queen and the uptight straightgay man are being catty and grabbing boobies, but god forbid something as, like, gross as one of them talking about their sex life be shown. lol

I only watched the show here and there because I didn't care for it, but the vast majority of W&G devotees (not to mention Queer Eye worshippers) I've spoken to are straight women who want a pet homo to shop with and are "okay with the gays, as long as they're not flaunting themselves".

I have a funny gay pride parade story...

When I first got married we lived in California in the San Jose area. My family came out from Virginia to visit us for a couple of weeks. My grandma came along as well. We decided to head down to Santa Cruz one day and just see the sights. Well, we didn't know it but it was Pride week or something and there was a parade in town. We were just merrily driving along and we saw the parade. Everyone in the car was trying to figure out what it was all about and then my grandma says, "Oh...My...God..." We turned to see a giant purple penis and 2 pink balls being marched by. falloff

My grandma yells, "Give me the camera! I'm taking pictures cause no one back home is gonna believe this!"

falloff

She was cracking up!

OK...that's my funny gay pride parade story.

I totally agree that there is overexposure of sex in our media, but I wasn't especially talking about sexual exposure. Mostly, but not all. I also think seeing something on tv is different than seeing it in real life and in your face

I hear you. The parade itself is a fine thing. If it merely shocked people, then I couldn't care less. I only raise the question because peoples' rights are actually being denied, and I have a feeling the images from the parade are the kind of things they picture when they vote against gay marriage of commit some other hateful act. But maybe you're right and they'd feel that way no matter what images are broadcast.

But I am not suggesting that the parade not happen or that it is bad. It's one of those basic rights in and of itself. The right to express yourself however you want. Sacrificing one freedom for another doesn't make any sense.

let me remind you that it is those people whose pictures that are printed that you fear cast a bad image that were the first to stand up and demand the rights we have now. while those people who critize them were to afaird to do anything. now that we have the rights they want the people that built the table they sit out to leave the dinner the party.

On the other hand I saw the movie Wanted Sunday and I was stunned by
the number of children in the audience at a matinee. With parents.
There is more sex in the movies than they would see at a Pride parade.
And a lot less violence at a Pride parade.
On balance, I'd prefer the children be at a Pride parade.

LOL, are u kidding me, u comparing a real life actual event to a movie where a man fly thru glass 60 stories in the air shooting and a train falling off a mountain and people survive!! I guess Bugs Bunny real too and Roosters do talk like Fog horn leghorn!!

I have attended some parades and there were few children there. If I had children I probably wouldn't take them as I would have a hard time to explain to them some of the SM outfits. I would not have a hard time to explain them that some people are gay and neither with the nudity you can see at those parades at least here in Europe. If parents don't feel comfortable taking their kids there then they shouldn't do it shrug. And if somebody has views about sexuality like the thread starter why on earth even go there with or without children shrug.
With a very special thank you to Tina: Is hammer already absolute, how much some people verändern...ICH hope is never so I will be! And if, then I hope that I would then have wen in my environment who joins me in the A....
