Shame on American's who didn't vote!

Last night I was in LA and I stopped for a bite to eat at Yoshinoya and a homeless guy was standing at the door and opened it for me. When I left I gave him a dollar and he asked me if he could ask me a question. He said "I heard that the Republicans have full power, is that true?" I told him that the Republicans did in fact have the majority in each branch.

He asked me what that meant for him and how I felt about the pending war on Iraq. We sat and discussed politics for about 20 minutes.

My point is that this homeless man was interested in current events and surely would have voted had his circumstance been different. Shame on all the people who have the option and the luxury of being able to cast their vote but didn't.

Shame!

I make it a point to exercise my right to vote. I even took my child with me to the polling place so he could learn what's its all about...start 'em off young!

Well that's what life is all about. Making a difference, even if it's taking 20 minutes of your time to talk to someone noone else will. And congrats to you Apples for making the difference where you are too! smile hug

My gf did the same with her daughter. Kudos to you for doing that. My junior high school did mock votes with the same voting machines the adults were using and i thought that was cool.

And Superfunki...i totally agree. Americans who continually refuse to vote should be ashamed of themselves. There's simply too much at stake right now not to vote: an unprovoked war, failing schools, the economy, the drug war in the streets of almost any major US city, corporate scandals...the list goes on and on.

I'm happy to say i live in a state which had the largest voter turnout for any US state at 60% of eligible voters this past election(and it snowed this past Tues)...but even 60% sucks the big one.

so if he would have stabbed you in the gut and took your wallet we would have never known that you were just talking politics. I am glad you took a chance. I don't usually give money, but I do like buying an extra bagel and juice and giving one to the guy on the corner. He looks so amazed when I do that.

It would have been a bold move to stab me in front of the police officers that were sitting 5 feet away inside the Yoshinoya wink I don't often give money but sometimes I do. I will always help out someone with food, no questions asked. It sucks to be hungry, especially for someone without the resources many of us are blessed to have. With the money thing I look at it this way. The guy/gal is so fucking down, what does it hurt for me to give them a buck or some change? I know it likely goes to the next drink, smokes or a fix but who am I to deny them that piece of satisfaction? My NOT giving them a buck won't change the fact that they are gonna be sleeping on the street that night.

Haystack

Surely democracy is about having the right not to vote if you don't want to?
I don't think it's fair to say that someone should be ashamed of not voting. I didn't vote at the last general election here in the UK because I didn't support any of the parties. Am I supposed to have the logic that 'I don't support one party, therefore I must agree with another'? I don't think so. Likewise, as I don't like football, I don't feel that I should be forced to support any particular team.

I think SupaFunkyOG is talking about America. In America you can write in the candidate of your choice if you don't want to choose who is running for a particular party. A lot of people in America have the gall to complain, but yet don't walk their talk or put their time where their whine is.
This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

This isn't why most people here in the US aren't voting. They are too damn lazy or have lapsed into an apathetic mindset. I know many people that think that it doesn't matter if they vote or not, even if they are behind a particular person/issue/party.

And especially since nobody has to DIE in order to have the right to vote. People should be ashamed to take such an awesome freedom for granted.
