Are you the kind of person who will raise to your feet and clap passionately anywhere, or will you do it because everyone else around you is?

Or are you pickier about who gets your standing O's, and you only do it when you feel like the performers put on an especially brilliant performance?

And I'm talking about anywhere you applaud at the end: plays, concerts, funerals, lectures - what is your general Standing O policy?

If i really really good I'll stand up. If its not so hot and everyone is standing up, I usually look around while sitting and wondering why they are doing it-I know snob

This is pretty much where I am at on giving up the O

I do it only when I really feel like someone deserves it.
Sometimes I'm a bit uncomfortable when I get glares when I don't stand.

But I get over it quickly

i'm glad there are still some picky audience members in the world. i thought in recent years it became common practice to give just anyone a standing O, which would be all kinds of dumb.

It really annoys me that people give standing ovations for everything now. It takes a WHOLE LOT to make me stand up and clap... even when the rest of the audience does it. Of course, it's not like it matters at that point -- who can even see my ornery butt?

But yeah I'm pretty picky with it and yes it doesn't seem very special anymore which is pretty sad. I mean people can just be extreme fans of whatever it is and said performance could be a complete pile of shit and yet they still get up and clap on, and then the fellow sheep all follow suit

i guess it depends on what kind of mood the performance (or whatever) has left me in or how much i actually care.

if i'm really blown away, i'll be the first one to jump up and clap. if i'm actively turned off, i'll stay seated and scowl. if i don't really care or i'm not really that interested, i may get up and half-heartedly clap if everyone else does while i look around the room.

but yeah, the standing o' at the drop of a hat has gotten ridiculous.

and i've only clapped in a movie theater a couple of times. it didn't feel too silly, because everyone else did as well (though in retrospect, one of the was the first X-Men movie, so i should probably have felt a little more embarrassed by the mob of geek-love that i was contributing to. but, you know, dreams coming true and all that...)

On very rare occasions, do I feel inspired to give the O. On those occasions, I'm usually one of the first to stand...so don't call me a sheep. Other times, I tend to stand because I would rather see the performer respond then stare at a bunch of backsides.

I'll be the first to stand if I was moved, absoultely. And if everyone is standing but me, I'll get up too. But in general, I think it's supposed to mean something. It IS supposed to be really special.

i think times have changed, and it's more common now.

If you just stand up to stand up, it doesn't mean anything (unless your butt hurts from sitting so long.)
