They are still children themselves so it's unfair to judge them too harshly.

I think we fail our children by expecting them to live in a fast-paced, celebrity-obsessed world without giving them the tools to make responsible decisions.

This is why it's really important to give children, at a young age, good sex education. I've always believed in "citizenship" education too, based on teaching that each action has a consequence. We have got some fantastic young people on this planet, but we're neglecting to pass on our experience and knowledge to them and instead are alienating a lot of them.

I hope all goes well for all of them, and their children.

You can't just sum it up as that being the problem. It's a combination of poor education, absent parenting (for whatever reason) and horrible media images being rammed down kid's throats.

And this kind of behaviour goes way beyond lack of good sex education. There is an epidemic where are children are growing up without good parental guidance and most important of all - love.

From the NY Daily News:

Teen girls made pact to get pregnant and raise their children together

DAILY NEWS STAFF
Thursday, June 19th 2008, 3:05 PM

A group of teenage girls made a solemn pact - not to be friends forever, go to the prom together or try out for a sports team.

They agreed to get pregnant. And they kept their promise.

Seventeen girls at Gloucester High School in Massachusetts are expecting babies, Time.com first reported.

None of the mothers-to-be, who are planning to raise their babies together, are over age 16. One of the fathers is a 24-year-old homeless man.

In a typical year, the school has about 4 pregnancies among its 1,200 students.

Schools Superintendent Christopher Farmer said the girls "lack self-esteem and have a lack of love in their life," in an interview with local news station WBZTV.

School officials discovered the pact after they noticed a spike in the number of girls requesting pregnancy tests at their health clinic.

"Some girls seemed more upset when they weren't pregnant than when they were," Joseph Sullivan, the school's principal, told Time.

A girl who had a baby during her freshman year and recently graduated from the school explained to the magazine her own theory about the unusual decision.

"They're so excited to finally have someone to love them unconditionally," Amanda Ireland, 18, said. "I try to explain it's hard to feel loved when an infant is screaming to be fed at 3 a.m."

The school, which encourages teenage mothers to stay in school with on-site day-care, is currently reviewing its policies on contraception and sex-education classes.

In response to the rash of pregnancies, the school’s nurse practitioner and medical director wanted to start distributing birth control without parental consent. After the town’s mayor protested, they quit.

This is so scary to think that girls are still feeling the need to go this route for acceptance and love. And to think of this new generation they are bringing into the world, how dysfuntional their lives are going to be. disbelief

eek

damn...

I knew things were changing with kids today, but I never realized
there was such a drastic difference of perspective just within 5 years of age.

In a (sort of) unrelated story though, this reminds me a liitle bit of a fictional film by director Sion Sono called "Jiatsu Circle", about teenage girl cliques in Japan who commit waves of mass suicide as a way out and final solution from lives of monotonous, societal conformity. The story, opening with 54 school girls keeping a secret pact by jumping in front of a train- is waaaay out there. But the story is compelling in how it examines teenage issues like isolation, angst, mass consumerism and desire to be noticed and fit in, etc. etc.

It's our generation that is to blame - not them. We're the ones that are raising them - and extremely poorly I must add. They are a product of 'us'.

LadyLuvSexxy

eek Even in the lowest moments of our lives, my friends and I would NEVER do something like this. I mean, shit, we cussed and drank a little. We cried but we ALWAYS HAD ONE ANOTHER. This is just..wow. There's no justification in this. There is a lot, no, a TON that goes into having a baby. And I know these girls aren't thinking. None of them are ready. This is a cry for help and shame on them and their parents both. I know some peeps want to coin it up to Jamie Lynn Spears (one reporter in Chicago tried to make that connection) but it's all on the parents for not watching their kids more closely and the kids for not thinking more clearly about the choices they've made. I cannot believe this, and I heard this story like two days ago.
Even if they are children, they should be able to figure out right from wrong. Seriously. I'm only 22 my darn self, but at that age I wasn't even thinking about sex or babies. Sure babies were great to hold, but, I was way more interested in anime and writing a novel. I played video games and made good grades at that age. I knew having a baby let alone sex was o-u-t. And society then and now has only been tweaked so much. It seems that the lack of harsh judgment in this case is what possibly led these girls to think that their parents would probably either help them out lots or give them some sort of adult freedom. My father never did that. He kept me on lockdown and taught me lots of things for me to base my adult life on. He took the time to guide me and set me right so that I wouldn't end up doing something like this. I went to school with girls who got pregnant and they had a hard time with everything. I ended up having to help a lot of them Senior year. I did that because I felt they were wonderful girls who didn't deserve to suffer. Just like these girls, they needed /felt like they needed some sort of love from a new person. It changed their lives and a lot of them didn't even get to experience college after graduation. With a baby, they had to set their time and also get better jobs. The justification stops at the fact that they are children having babies of their own. I'd cut them more slack if it had not been known they actually got upset when they weren't pregnant at first. The entire idea of them trying is what really bothers me. They kept trying.
I made pacts with my friends to meet 10 years from now. I made pacts to keep in touch. To go to a Cubs game and eat hot dogs around the Silver Bean in Millenium Park. We made pacts not to get some guy's name tattooed on our butts! razz We never went as far as these young things have gone. And I guess that's where our generations differ a great deal.
