Okay, ya'll, we're reaching critical mass!!! hug

I think I'll go for it. It's the path of least resistance, and that's that!

And this comment helped too:

One last thing when I'm in a quandary like this and am asking other people for advice. I sit myself down and ask myself this: Am I asking for other opinions because deep down I want them to validate accepting this or do I really want them to justify my turning it down? That's usually the answer to go with, for me.

And I'm serious about my above answer. Being out of work means you're not pouring anything into your 401k right now. And that's lost time.

Also, it stuns me when folks can just leave their jobs. I'd have to file for bankruptcy within a couple of months if I did that. lol

i worked at a non-profit with a mission i believed in for substantially less than I'd made in similar jobs (substantial = more than $10,000) and could walk to work.

then i moved, the org took a turn in a direction i really disliked, which included cuts to benefits, and i left. it's interim, but i'm making even less now but am much much much more happy and have time to do the things i want to do. i, too, find that i am always able to live within the means i have.

go for it -- and if it doesn't work, you leave!

and that job seemed so perfect for you! Are you taking the bus now to work?

I've been out of work several times for several months and it wasn't the lack of the money that was the problem so much as feeling like a lazy, worthless bum. Yet often it was plainly being a lazy, worthless bum that had me without work.

What exactly is a 401k?

for a good run, it was. then i got to the point where i dreaded going in. one day i was on the bus to go to an interview and decided that i had to quit as son as i got back to the office. i did that and didn't realize til weeks after i was gone just how much of me was zapped out in a toxic place.

now, the producer i'm working with picks me up and drops me off. that's nice! and for long term, i will land downtown, which will be 5 minutes by bus.

go for it!!!
let me come over it's a beautiful day to play with you in the dark

Answering your question literally I'd have to say no because when I was working it was minimum wage and I refuse to work for less than I'm legally entitled to, and right now I'm not working. Bit hard to make less than nothing. lol

Figuratively speaking though, hell yes! I don't understand people who's work objective is dollar signs. I'd switch jobs in a heartbeat, especially if it was for an organization or company that was devoted to social justice causes.

lol Because I had just set up my own business and began making a decent wage for the first time in my life. I was enjoying the money and the independence. biggrin Then my freelance gigs dried up, and while I could get some more, this job walks along, enticing me in a weak moment. Less independence, less money, but lots of coolness!

It's a hard decision for me.

i would be afraid that the coolness would wear off once i fully realized what it meant to have less independence and money.

What would it mean?

I don't know if other people experience this, but I've known a lot of people who get moderately depressed (sometimes even really depressed) on Sunday nights because they dread going in to work the next day. I decided fairly early on in my career that I would never be one of those people. Having a job you don't dread is part of the compensation package you have to consider, or at least it is for me. But also important are your short- and long-term career goals. I would consider the opportunities that go along with this job, the possibilities of career advancement, and the chance to make more money there.

One last thing when I'm in a quandary like this and am asking other people for advice. I sit myself down and ask myself this: Am I asking for other opinions because deep down I want them to validate accepting this or do I really want them to justify my turning it down? Wow. I need you to talk to some of my clients!!

As for the 40K pay cut I took--it was only temporary. My business got up and running within a matter of months and I also had my music (performance and teaching) to supplement what I was doing. I also got a part-time job at another college that was a MUCH better fit for me.

Would you be going backwards if you accepted it? Or would you keep beating the bushes for something better?

Say it's just a dream...
U open up ur eyes and come 2 realize
u simply imagined this
So u lean over and give her a kiss
Here on earth, here on earth,
with u it's not so bad
Here on earth, here on earth
eye don't feel so sad

thank you!

During the interview, my soon-to-be boss said i could take classes for free, then suggested I teach some classes in the theater school! eek I'm a bit freaked out about the wage loss, but maybe this will lead to other things.

I work close to home and it's excellent pay. I see myself staying there for a few years actually as I work my way up. If there is a way better opportunity in the future, maybe when I'm close to my 30's which isn't that far off, maybe I'll do something else, but for now, I like what I'm doing.

If your job isn't paying you much, depending on your hours, you can always find a relief job as well if you want extra pocket money. I have a relief one as well as my full time one.

I already work for a pretty cool organization. At least in my eyes. But it all depends on what would be 'substantially less'. Like 33% less? 50%? I don't see how anyone could make those sort of sacrifices in this economy. But then again, someone else's responsibilities may be radically different from mine.

My answer at this time would be no.
