Absolutely not. I can completely understand why people would want to speak their own language even if they can also speak another.

I live in Canada and we have 2 official languages - French and English. I believe that either one of these should be spoken in the work environment.

I think it's great that people can speak different languages, but in a country where the official language is English, people should be speaking English. When they are away from the work environment, they can speak whatever language they like.

I love it when they do that and it's a language I know some of (like Italian or Spanish or French or some Hungarian) I can usually piece together what they're saying and they don't know it. lol

Yeah, yeah, everyone's a critic... My German is a bit rusty, especially the grammatical and that's a shame considering I speak it fluently without an accent... Wife's German, Dad's German... sheesh! what a bunch of Krauts...

I'd say you pass as German whether you like it or not wink . Too bad most people don't like Germans razz lol . Just kidding lol .
With a very special thank you to Tina: Is hammer already absolute, how much some people verändern...ICH hope is never so I will be! And if, then I hope that I would then have wen in my environment who joins me in the A....

Not really, but I do get annoyed when I'm in a store and the cashier hardly speaks a word of my language, when I'm in my own country. The pizza delivery guys hardly even speak English these days!

So what?

As long as you and whoever else find a way to communicate, I honestly don't see what the problem is.

How does speaking another langauge qualify as unprofessional behaviour? confuse

They're not dressing inappropriately, not being disruptive or noisy, not being violent or sexually provocative, not playing loud music, it doesn't impede their work ability or ethic.....

How about this. Say you're in a meeting with two co-workers. Then all of a sudden they turn around & start speaking in another language to each other. Wouldn't that seem a bit "secretive" to you?

shrug

It's no different than sending an email to some co-workers and not others, and that happens all the time for perfectly legitimate reasons.

The problem with pizza delivery guys that they don't seem to understand the simple directions to my apartment that I have already given the service rep on the phone.
I don't usually care if the cashier in a low-priced supermarket speaks Icelandic since you get the service you pay for in these kind of stores.... HOWEVER when I'm going to a more up-scale supermarket I expect the cashier to know more in my language than "Góðan daginn" (Good afternoon) and "Poka?" (Plastic bag?).... They usually can't even tell me the total price in Icelandic! How hard is it for their supervisors to at least teach them the friggin' numbers? mad
Even the cashiers at the local POLISH grocery store speak better Icelandic than the cashiers at this particular up-scale supermarket which (unfortunately) is the closest one to my workplace.

No I don't take offence. Talk away - I prefer to be in my own head anyway and it saves me having to bother with conversation.

We should be friends. I could so sit with you and not bother with conversation while you do exactly the same. hug

giggle

I hardly ever speak Thai to begin with around most Thais. I just hang back and let them assume I know only the basic conversational stuff most foreigners do and then if I want to chime in at some point I do. I like just listening to the conversations around me in Thai. smile
