That's my answer höppallaa! Haifaiv! nope not all. but then again I know I am not important enough to think that someone is talking shit about me in another language. It isn't the load that breaks us down, it's the way we carry it.

but you know they only talk in another language so they can say whatever they want about you! that is what other languages are for! My parents used to talk in german when they discussed their parenting strategies, which they didn't realise I understood, It was ALWAYS about me I made it my business to know.

I work at a place that has a lot of different Nationalities. The thing that bothers me is when I'm in a room with people who know English...choose to speak in another Language. It's no big deal, but it seems kinda rude sometimes. Especially when there's a bunch of laughing going on. U never know if they're talking about U. Am I the only one that is bothered by this?? No. Why would I get offended? People I don't even know have no obligation to let me in on their conversations. Besides, I love hearing languages other than my own. That's one of my favourite things about big cities -the linguistic variety. As long as I've got no reason to think they're talking shit about me, it doesn't bother me in the slightest. Now what DOES bother me is people who claim to speak English but can't be arsed to do it right. These tend to be a lot of the same people bitching because others dare speak their own language. Imagine that. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

A long time ago, when my grandmother was still alive, my parents and I went to visit her in the nursing home. An older lady approached me, and began speaking to me in Italian. Since I don't speak Italian, I had no idea what the heck she was saying to me. Luckily, a lady who worked at the nursing home was there, and she told me to just tell her "No capisce". So I tried saying that to the woman who was speaking to me in Italian. The only trouble was, I don't think she got the message, because she kept talking to me in Italian, and getting quite animated too. It was like she was saying, "Don't you understand what I'm trying to tell you?!" It was funny as hell. Now I find myself saying, "no capisce!" sometimes when I don't understand or am puzzled by something.
[Edited 6/18/08 17:59pm] That happens to me all the time whenever I go into 7-11. For some reason they think I'm spanish. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

My dad's family is Armenian (his parents came directly from there), so of course, he and his siblings know how to speak the language. Once when I was with them, my one aunt said something to me in Armenian. I know she said about me, because she used my name at the beginning of the sentence. After she said it, my aunts busted out laughing. I have no idea what on earth she said, but it must have been pretty funny. I remember feeling hurt about the whole thing, since I was much younger when this happened. I thought to myself, "Gee, what on earth are they saying to me that they can't say in English, so I know what they're saying?" RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Why would it offend me that people are talking in a language they feel comfortable with?
No I don't take offence. Talk away - I prefer to be in my own head anyway and it saves me having to bother with conversation.

When I'm talking to another Israeli, and there aren't any people around who pay attention, I'd speak Hebrew. If there are people around, I'd rather speak English so to not get attention from others when hearing foreign language. I sometimes speak Hebrew because it's faster for me. I think in Hebrew, and the words come easier, even when my English is fine.

Bishop31 said: Teacher said: Yes it does, the unspoken rule is/should be that in the company of somebody who don't speak your native language (if being other than English) and everybody in the room speaks English, then you do too. I've been in situations with visiting friends from other countried where Swedish friends of mine have spoken Swedish but I respond in English, that usually makes them catch on.
Now, that is manners. I wish more folks would do that. That's the first time EVER anybody accused me of having manners...wait... Thanks, I think.

Not really, but I do get annoyed when I'm in a store and the cashier hardly speaks a word of my language, when I'm in my own country. The pizza delivery guys hardly even speak English these days!
I also did get annoyed when I was on holiday in Mallorca and there were constantly people with flyers yelling things at me in German..... It was so weird.... I mean, just because I'm fair skinned and at a tourist beach doesn't make me automatically German. Oh, and I have a question for Ariel. Is that fizzy buballah (or whatever it's called) that Adam Sandler's character in the Zohan film loves, a real drink? And also, is that word that I'm guessing means "gay" (fay-ga-lah)... is it Hebrew or Yiddish? It sounded like Adam Sandler was using a lot of Yiddish phrases in that film just to sound more Israeli/Jewish.

Never heard of that drink. Doesn't sound like anything Israeli.
Faygale is in Yiddish (which is not close to Hebrew) and I think it does mean something like gay, or feminine boy.

Yeah thats right! Good luck with that though... Hab euch alle ganz doll lieb!! I understood every word even though it was not correct German . Yeah, yeah, everyone's a critic... But if it were my friends that I was out with and they switched language to talk about me, I'd say something.

It's a phrase I remember from my childhood as a Jewish/London phrase ... I have no idea what it means though - something like "grandmother" or "darling"?
