I sometimes do that myself. When I am with somebody who speaks German and somebody who speaks English I usually try to speak English, so that the other person can understand what we are saying. But as my English isn't that good it's sometimes just easier to switch into German. In regards to people speaking another language in front of others, I have a funny story. A long time ago, when my grandmother was still alive, my parents and I went to visit her in the nursing home. An older lady approached me, and began speaking to me in Italian. Since I don't speak Italian, I had no idea what the heck she was saying to me. Luckily, a lady who worked at the nursing home was there, and she told me to just tell her "No capisce". So I tried saying that to the woman who was speaking to me in Italian. The only trouble was, I don't think she got the message, because she kept talking to me in Italian, and getting quite animated too. It was like she was saying, "Don't you understand what I'm trying to tell you?!" It was funny as hell. Now I find myself saying, "no capisce!" sometimes when I don't understand or am puzzled by something. [Edited 6/18/08 17:59pm] RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

[Edited 6/18/08 17:59pm] That happens to me all the time whenever I go into 7-11. For some reason they think I'm spanish.

No, that doesn't bother me.
One thing though, with the exception of with my wife, sister in law and a few others, if I'm around Thai ppl I feel way more comfortable speaking Thai than English.

Don't tell anyone, but the only reason I'm dating Ariel is to learn a new language. I'm tired of being left out!

Erm, don't they speak English in Canada? He is Israeli. So he speaks Hebrew and his mother is French so he speaks that as well. He has only been in Canada a year and a half. He grew up in Jerusalem and lived there until just recently.

Sometimes. It IS rude, but whatcha gonna do??

It used to, but not anymore. I know a few things here and there in different languages from my curiousity. I love learning new words and phrases in other languages. I agree that some people are more comfortable speaking in their primary/native language. I've also found that sometimes you can't find the right words to express what you're trying to say in English. That was the case with my grandmother. "When words fail, music speaks..." --- Shakespeare

My outlaws were of another culture (Filipino). They would or others would ask me if it was ok for them to talk in their language. I always said no problem, I knew enough to speak or understand most of what they were saying anyways Ohh purple joy oh purple bliss oh purple rapture!
