I work at a place that has a lot of different Nationalities. The thing that bothers me is when I'm in a room with people who know English...choose to speak in another Language. It's no big deal, but it seems kinda rude sometimes. Especially when there's a bunch of laughing going on. U never know if they're talking about U. Am I the only one that is bothered by this?? It doesn't bother me now, but it used to Now that I've gotten to know alot of people who speak multiple languages I really don't mind anymore....most times they are talking about something completely unrelated to you Besides, I speak Spanish well enough, but if I lived in Puerto Rico with other English speakers, I'd probably talk to them in English most of the time If you will, so will I

there was this girl i went to college with who used to do that to me. she would speak Spanish with a friend of mine in front of me, knowing that I didn;t know spanish. She basically would try to exclude me from the conversation anyway she knew how. That really was obnoxious.
She also used to tell me that I was ugly because my skin was lighter than hers and that i was going to get raped because I had long hair. So, in short, she was a bitch with issues. When other people do it, I don't mind too much. I guess it depends on the situation.

I'm sorry, but that was just so outragious that I had to laugh. What the hell does "Long Hair" have to do with a person getting raped?! right? her reasoning, and this actually does make sense, is that the rapist grabs you by your hair and you can't escape. Okay, fine. But then she would start to insinuate that it was definitely going to happen to me. The girl had/has some major issues and her physical insecurities were a major one. Yes it does, the unspoken rule is/should be that in the company of somebody who don't speak your native language (if being other than English) and everybody in the room speaks English, then you do too. I've been in situations with visiting friends from other countried where Swedish friends of mine have spoken Swedish but I respond in English, that usually makes them catch on.

Now, that is manners. I wish more folks would do that.

It bothers me as well like they are talking about me with me sitting there. It happens a lot with Spanish speaking people when I'm on the bus or train. For whatever reason, they assume we all don't speak or understand Spanish and I do. This is how I learned spanish but I don't let on My in-laws think as long as they occasionally say "sorry Charlotte" that it's OK to spend the whole lunch or dinner speaking in spanish. I used to totally switch off, or go take a nap on the couch but now I occasionally contribute to the convo and get a funny look.
