The Happening - Any reviews?

For the most part, response to M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening has been pretty brutal. People are calling it arguably his worst film. sad

Has anyone seen it? Any unofficial org reviews?

The movie wasn't scary.

The emotional stakes in the movie were not all that belieavable.

There were certain really great visual scenes--done rather stylized, but they 'worked' regardless. The problem is that they made the movie seem less real and gritty and more dream like.

**** SPOILER BELOW *****

The entire premise of the movie is that mass suicides are happening all over the north east of the United States, because plants are releasing a chemical that causes us to switch off the rational portion of our brains which keeps us from killing ourselves and being animalistic.

Before anybody rolls their eyes at this concept, plants actually have evolved over time to do things which are NOT that far fetched from the concept in this movie. Plants release all number of chemicals that make insects behave in various ways by altering their brain functions, and we even use certain plants for their hallucinogenic and other various properties now. It's not unplausible that plants could evolve defense mechanisms which cause them to just release those chemicals airborn.

Mark Walberg also gives a good performance and looks absolutely hawt in this movie--I love the additional age on his face. The boyish quality is still there rolleyes, but he also looks more like a man now. What an ass he has on him--not quite Thomas Jane's ass, but still a great ass. Great ass.

great ass.

The ending was stupid though. And overall, the movie is NOT a great movie. Its one of his weaker ones. But I liked the premise--just not the execution.

The premise is perhaps the most intriguing part. It's a stretch, buy, hey, it's ostensibly sci-fi. shrug What I've heard, though, is that the suicide scenes are supposed to be disturbing, but they start to come off as funny. Also, someone was going on about absurd shots of "evil plants" and the ominous wind that carried their neurotoxins. giggle Please tell me these things are unbased

The suicides are sometimes hilarious.

**** SPOILER ALERT ****

The suicide at the zoo was hilarious

The lawnmower suicide was hilarious

And the 'reations' to those suicides appeared to have been directed by George Lucas.

What on earth is a Lammastide anyways? Sounds like it might have won the best in show at a herding competition in Peru or something.

It's a foreign language portmanteau word. "La" means "the" or "there." "Masti" is Punjab for "God's grace." And "de" means "to venture" or "go" in Sanskrit.

Loosely translated it means, "There but for the grace of God go I."

I'd fuck Ed Norton before I fucked Mark Walberg for sure. Ed looks like he'd be a good bottom. Mark looks like he'd be too bossy about it.
