I worked for studio on a salary, and after a while I asked to move into hourly rates, for $15 an hour + %17 tax, which was what some of the other ones were starting to get paid. He agreed. After 2 months, when he got my bills for much more than I've been getting paid for in salary, he called me and told me he has to lower my rate. I said "no, we agreed on a certain pay, I worked those hours, I deserve that pay". He said "well, I can't give you work anymore, since you're too expensive for me." I said "Fine, I'll finish my shift and go." He left home and came back after two hours, saying "ok, I thought about it and you can stay."
I practically built his studio and was the only one who know how to fully operate it and deal with tech problems. He knew he couldn't afford losing me.
Though after a while I did resign because he kept paying late, not just me, but I was the first one to say 'enough is enough'. I resigned and sued him for severance pay, which he paid.

I have no problem giving more than I'm getting, as long as there is respect. Once I get played, I don't give anymore.

I think your move will be in your favor. I hope you'll find something better soon.

by the way, I had my own badass moment last week and quit my job too. They weren't paying me for lack of funds, among other madness. I got when I saw the Director paid her girlfriend, after holding my checks for a month and a half. Here's my email:



I see that L's check for $700 cleared at the bank. I was not informed about that check, so any of the info I gave you as to how many funds we have available was off by $700.

Also, I was surprised to see it as I thought my check was next in line (that's what I had been told). When X repeatedly breaks its agreements with me (to get paid on time, to get paid next) and checks get written without bothering to let me know so that I can do my job correctly...I feel like my work is not valued.

Until X pays me, I can no longer put in hours. My owed balance is now up to $3850 and will stop there.

Funny thing is, it looks like I already have another job to take its place.

That's how I am too. I was working for this social service non-profit (until last week, that is ) I had given them a second chance. Last summer they went three months without paying me. I had other clients so could handle it, but still.

When they wanted to hire me on as a more permanent employee, I said, sure, if you pay me on time. That was my one condition and I gave them a second chance. When they stopped paying me in May, I was already out of there.

Yes, it's an issue of respect.
