I suppose any service would have a fee, in this case it would be unfair the recipient gets charged since he isn't a "merchant" or anything

If you decide to pay for the item you won on ebay with paypal which ebay highly advocates, then the person receiving the payment also gets charged by paypal. Thats why sometimes the person listing will tac on an extra charge in the --'handling'--/shipping department to cover the cost of you paying them what they would lose for you using paypal. Its not uncommon, in fact I would say its highly likely, it would just make good sense that even an item purchased by you out side of ebay, but paid through paypal likly has the added charge already calculated in its total cost, unknown to you. [Edited 6/17/08 18:54pm] I understand all the eBay stuff OK, here is the scenario I sent a friend overseas $25 I owed them (there was no set "price" so to speak, I owed him $25 so that is what I sent him, so he got charged for it? I will have to ask him how much he actually got. I just thought it would be an easier way than wiring money or something, since it was international. yes, he got charged i believe 5%, if you used paypal to pay him. He got charged something.

i cant remember, but isnt that how wester union is? wired money? dunno never tried it - I've seen on TV how people have to go into a western union office to do it, so I thought that looks like too much hassle, but it can probably be done online nowadays

He got charged something. it's been awhile since i had to be aware of the distinction, but doesn't paypal only charge if you, as the seller, accept credit card payments? i think it is (or used to be) free if you go the e-check route via paypal. or maybe i'm mis-remembering. added the option (for the fees) to allow credit card payments a long time ago, just to avoid the hassle of having to tell people i didn't accept them. "You sent a request for money to someone and the payment came back in the form of an eCheck. What is an eCheck, and how does it differ from an instant PayPal payment? In the same way that Quasi-cash is the equivalent of cash in the physical (as opposed to online) world, eChecks are the digital counterpoints of the pieces of paper found in a checkbook. When someone sends you an eCheck as payment, the funds won't be deposited into your account for three or four days (however long it takes for the eCheck to clear). To send an eCheck, in response to an invoice or Money Request, you need to have a bank (checking or savings) account linked to your PayPal account. "

that's the exact same thing as a debit card, isn't it? i had a visa "check card" thingie when i lived in chicago, and i think my card said "debit". i think it's all just a matter of what we call it from state to state. then again, i don't know much about money or banking stuff other than how to overdraw from my account. i'm good at that. When debit cards were first introduced, they were often only for local markets. When I lived in Wisconsin, I had a debit card that could draw cash from an atm or be used at certain local businesses, but wasn't accepted as a Visa (it was a different network) so could really only be used locally. I guess they're probably all Visa now. But you'll notice, for example, that when you run your card yourself at, say, the grocery store you have the option of choosing "debit" or "credit". No one in the state of Minnesota uses the debit option. It's only there cause the devices are made for national use. So they're essentially the same. But they're different too. |

You get to access your bank and pay. That way it's paid for already no credit bill to pay off at the end of the month. I keep a copy of the bank transactions and the emails for shipping information. I didn't know debit was an option as online payment. PayPal is a good payment method, and credit card too. Those are the most protect methods that I know. I finally managed to verify my PayPal account. But since I'm broke, it doesn't really matter. I used Western Union in the past, when I lived in Israel, since there was no option to verify a PayPal account and since I don't use credit cards. But the charge is high and there's no protection. Luckily I landed on honest sales.

When paying for winning auctions on eBay, I use PayPal. If it's anything else, though, I use my debit card.
And eBay + PayPal = SCAM! First I get charged eBay fees for selling something there, then they charge me again for having someone pay me through PayPal when it's the same damn company! I'm having people pay me in money orders from now on.
