What is Gothic anyway? While looking for pix to post in the silly gothic thread, I came across
some weird pix of baby dolls... and it made me wonder what exactly is gothic? Does anyone know? I googled it but not sure, it says it's a culture out of East Germany. But what does that have to do with the gothic look?

It's like 'Dirty South' but for people with no sex appeal.

But what does that have to do with the gothic look? There ya go: "The goth subculture is a contemporary subculture found in many countries. It began in the United Kingdom during the early 1980s in the gothic rock scene, an offshoot of the post-punk genre. The goth subculture has survived much longer than others of the same era, and has continued to diversify. Its imagery and cultural proclivities indicate influences from nineteenth century Gothic literature along with horror movies and to a lesser extent—according to César Fuentes Rodríguez and Carol Siegel—the BDSM culture.[1][2] The goth subculture has associated tastes in music, aesthetics, and fashion, whether or not all individuals who share those tastes are in fact members of the goth subculture. Gothic music encompasses a number of different styles. Common to all is a tendency towards a lugubrious, mystical sound and outlook. Styles of dress within the subculture range from deathrock, punk, androgynous, medieval, some Renaissance and Victorian style clothes, or combinations of the above, most often with black attire, makeup and hair." http://en.wikipedia.org/w...subculture

Thank you. | |

it would make sense it having roots in east germany.
to me more than it evoking the gothic style/period or victorian it seems more rooted in the bauhaus movement the same can be said about the styling of EMO bauhaus as much distain people have for things german because of the nazi association, it really is the birth of todays greatest styles and design. Everything else is influence/watered down copies of this IMO.
