but in the case of goth I think the point is mostly that these people would like attention It is definitely different strokes, but most of us lean towards that way because we feel more comfortable. It works for us. Not all goths likes the attention. I know I don't. It's just a matter of aesthetics. I did the all black thing all growing up, but didn't know why. I just felt more comfortable that way. I may not look all goth on the outside to the more "hardcore" goths, but I have a government job and really, who is going to waste all that good make-up if you're just going to be sitting around at home or just go grocery shopping? I tone it down, but still do heavy eyeliner. It seems that the "newbie" goths take it into a whole nother direction which is not what the goth genre was originally about. I don't really call myself a goth because of all of that. I don't want to be associated with the newer group, but I do associate myself with the older group. As for the whole music thing, at the goth clubs, you'll mainly hear new wave, death rock (which is NOT death metal), industrial (the more aggressive of the "goth music"), EBM, and newer "goth bands that incorporate all the sounds. Many goths listen to other genres as well. Hello, I'm a Prince fam! Johnny Cash is a big one due to his sound, attitude, and subject matter in his lyrics. I like a variety of music I listen to everything from Frank Mills( I love the instrumental "Music Box Dancer") to metal music from the 80's( no not death metal) my daughter even loves the band Heart(LOVES the song Baracuda) from back in my day in the early 80's lol. I also listen to groups like Within Temptation, Evanescence, Lacuna Coil and the like( I have listened to these groups and in NO WAY are these gruops satan related, depressing lyrics but that dont mean I have to run out and commit the unthinkable like suicide or killing people, EVERYONE gets depressed once in awhile even me) that dont make me goth or evil and such I like the music for a variety of reasons good beat, nice chorus( it remains in my head at times) and many others. Goth dont nessesarily mean people are mean and want to do harm to others or to themselves, its a way of expression they way I was allowed to express myself when I was younger. They also have incorperated music like classical into their songs which is really cool IMHO. Im letting my daughter do that as well she is finding herself and her individuality expressing herself. If she wants to dye her hair multiple colors that is fine too. She understands many people will misunderstand her for what she is wearing out in public. I have the comfort of knowing that if she needs to talk to me about stuff Im here as a parent and will offer the pros and cons about my advice and such. Sorry about the jibberish and so long. Perhaps I should've mentioned that I was mostly referring to the newbies who have no clue what goth is about and are the ones criticizing some of the older people. I grew up listening to a variety of music and I still do. My aunt had me listening to german operas and classical when I was 7 and my father exposed me to jazz, r&b, funk, oldies, salsa, merengue, etc since I was a baby. I love it all. The 80's, 80's metal, rockabilly, old school hip hop, etc. Heck, I brought some old Yo-Yo with me to work today. Your daughter is lucky to have such an understanding and supportive parent. I, too was lucky that my parents allowed me to explore my individualty as well. hehe Plus, coloring your hair is fun! My bangs are still red and I'm fortunate my job didn't make me change who I am. Look you guys, I know this thread's supposed to be all in fun and all that. But you folks are shitting all over Goths on a site dedicated to PRINCE, for God's sake.
PRINCE You know -that guy who wears 12 pounds of makeup a day and goes through an identity crisis every other week? That guy that's been keeping the ruffle and men's high heel industries in business for 30 years and going strong? That guy who thrives on being seen as mysterious and dark and strange? That guy who wouldn't know what to do with himself if he wasn't the center of attention? PRINCE I don't think a Prince fan has any place to make fun of Goths. Like, at all. Believe me, I'm speaking from experience here. I watched all my friends turn into dark, depressing, bitchy excuses for goths while I stayed who I was. They all thought they were SO original and would never listen to a word I had to say if it wasn't "My Chemical Romance!" "The Used!" "Chucks Sneakers!" "Vans!" "Horror movies!" "The Night Before Christmas!" "Marilyn Manson!" "Panic at the Disco!". I basically didn't exist anymore because I wasn't wearing black, dying my hair 700 different colours each week, wearing six tonnes of eyeliner, and "singing" depressing lyrics at the top of my lungs while everyone else goes "What the fuck are they on?!" Emo kids are not goths. They think they are. | |

I guess what I should of said in short terms: you cant judge a person just by their appearance becuase appearences ARE deceiving. I was also explaining as well that many goth individuals dont always listen to metal music or depressing music either. Let alone dress that way jsut because they are depressed. We had our way of expressing ourselves when we were younger I say if they are not hurting those around them and having a good time let them dress as such. I met some wonderful people that dressed that way at a concert I took my daughter too ( her very first one) and they were the nicest people you can ever meet. The girl had a earing attached to her nose, dressed in black from head to toe and had all the make up on. Yet was the nicest person. Again refer to the bold up top( not being sarcastic when I typed it either sorry). You are fine in typing what you typed andI understood it completely I was jsut giving light that NOT all goths are like that at all. We all get depressed at one time or another, but not all are like that. I'm one of those who smiles for the most part. hehe I think I was getting a bit defensive since I'm used to people judging me and mainly my friends (best friend has purple hair and has about 9 or 10 piercings on her face and more throughout her body) as well as being ignorant and adamant on what GOTH music is. I know some very moody, broody types in the scene, but I also know even more chipper, happy-go lucky people who have families and are always willing to meet new people. You are quite correct, one should never judge a book by it's cover. Like Depeche Mode said, "People are people so why should it be You and I should get along so awfully..."
