That is horrifying.
I wish I could send my brothers over there to stand guard at your place. They're a couple of rough dudes.
I am getting worried about you. I am getting a home alarm system myself but it will costs since I want a wireless one.

I guess these recent incidents made you look at things a bit differently now.
I'm sure that as a parent, you do all you can to keep your son happy and healthy,
and now, doing all you can to keep you both safe.

This could have happened anywhere, nowhere is ever safe.

I'd love to have a guy or 2 as roommates right now! As lame as this sounds having a dude around makes me feel so much safer.

For real. Real wake up call. I used to do stupid things like leave my doors open late at night so friends could just come in without having to knock and have the dog bark...not anymore.

I try not to be paranoid about things like this, but to be on the safe side,
I do lock doors.
During the time of the "Night Stalker" dude, everyone in California was on edge because
I think he would travel from Northern to Southern California, so no one was safe, that was his MO... through open doors.
So I guess I learned to be cautious from that experience, although it wasn't
as close to home, nor as personal.

Thanks guys.

Maybe I'm just being paranoid but this has made me aware of just how easy it is to be a victim. I've set up some new rules....like, no more coming home late at night with my son. Having to get him out of his car seat (when he is usually asleep) and into to house while trying to unlock the doors, etc is just too freaky at night. To be honest, that bike path/park across the street freaks me out to the max now. I've always thought it was kind of creepy because it's so dark...but this just pushed it over the edge.

perhaps you could start up a petition amongst the neighbourhood people
to get the city to put some (more) streetlights up there so that area
would at least be well lit at night.

anyways, sounds scary indeed.

It's not lame, Erin, because these twisted fucks that attack, rape, and torture women ALWAYS find and prey on women who R alone. They will knock on a woman's door, if possible, and ask for someone else until the door is cracked open, then bust in. As a Woman, U just can't trust any man U don't know, because these motherfuckers R tricky in their ways.

I've been following the case in NYC of the Columbia student who endured 19 hours of torture and rape in her own apartment. That story makes my skin crawl, and makes my blood boil. She was raped, and tortured with bleach, boiling water, and a knife. That happened last year, but the trial is going on now. She escaped, incredibly, because the monster tied her 2 a futon with computer cables, and set it on fire, then left... She came 2, and melted the wires with the flames, then stumbled out of her apartment calling 4 help, which she got. They caught the motherfucker, and the death penalty would be 2 good 4 this piece of shit.

ANYWAY... ALWAYS watch your back, and ALWAYs lock up your door when home and not. Someone mentioned window security. Do it. If U rent, U can demand that your landlord secure the windows 4 U.

Peace.

Pepper Spray is sold everywhere around here, Maise used to be. These things are the hard-core angle, hairspray and a lighter will get you some results, a pot of boiling water, hot grease are also effective.

Remember everything can be a weapon and while the obvious are great, a simple meat clever, really good set of steak knives will take a life if you're in fear of something happening to you. A cast iron frying pan and a lot of other stuff in the kitchen will also fuck someone up.

In the mean time, get a lock-smith to add a couple of locks to that door, one with a chain. Then remember people get so used to talking on their phones that they forget that other people are watching/listening. Be careful and always pay attention to your surroundings. A knife in your purse, or even a roll of loonies in a sock will really knock somebody for a loop when they're not expecting it.

Be safe.

The thing is though, where the hell am I gonna move to this time? I just moved out of a shitty neighbourhood this year into this one - which was supposed to be a great, safe place to live (not to mention is really beautiful around here).

sigh

That really sucks girlfriend comfort
I know how you feel...my neighborhood used to be really nice and peaceful with mostly elderly ppl around, but now there are all these group homes around, and the people who are supposed to be in charge of those kids really don't give a damn at all and just let them run wild mad
If you will, so will I

It's true. I live on my own (I rent a second floor apartment because of it) and will not answer the buzzer for any dude I don't know. There have been several times that guys I don't know have come to my building and have rang my doorbell. I just don't answer and I keep an eye on them until they leave. A few months back there was a rapist in my neighborhood who was preying on women who were distracted while entering their homes. You always need to keep an eye out and can never be too careful.

And the scary thing is that exclusive, wealthy and areas normally considered safe are now fair game for these freaks. They don't just prey on the poor anymore. Here in California I have noticed that there have been some really horrifying crimes in very exclusive and wealthy areas. These people are getting bolder in their sickness.

No, no. It's very rare to have gun related crimes here. It does happen, just not often.

They are not releasing her cause of death but witnesses said she looked like she was just beaten to death.

She was a 39 year old mother of two younger children. Yes, she had some problems (addicted to painkillers) and was probably out late at night on her own but that doesn't make this any less tragic or any less likely to be a random attack.

I would also suggest enrolling in a self-defense course for women. I took one that was only a few weeks and have always felt more secure getting around. It's empowering and teaches simple yet effective ways to hurt (or kill) someone in case of an assault -- as well as basic tips to avoid such situations.

This reminds me of an incident that happened when I was a kid. I grew up in a quiet middle class suburb of Minneapolis. In the house directly across the street from ours, there lived a family with two young children. Well, one night, the father shoots the mother dead in her bedroom. So this guy gets shipped off to a mental institution and for years, this tiny little old grandmother raises the two kids in the same house. eek The grandmother and kids eventually move out and about ten years later, the man gets released and returns to LIVE IN THE SAME HOUSE!!! So for years, we had to live across the street from a bona fide murderer. Weird.
