Thanks guys.

Maybe I'm just being paranoid but this has made me aware of just how easy it is to be a victim. I've set up some new rules....like, no more coming home late at night with my son. Having to get him out of his car seat (when he is usually asleep) and into to house while trying to unlock the doors, etc is just too freaky at night. To be honest, that bike path/park across the street freaks me out to the max now. I've always thought it was kind of creepy because it's so dark...but this just pushed it over the edge.

you SHOULD BE PARANOID. confused while at the repair shop having my car serviced this weekend, i read an article in the newspaper about violent assault against women and the stats are like 1 in 4 will be attacked, 1 in 6 will be raped.

meanwhile, i'm sitting a couple of seats away from a dude who is giving me a creepy vibe. THEN the old lady at the reception desk calls out my full name loudly, turning heads across the room as i walk over to pick up my keys and pay the tab. i quietly remind her that it's important to remember to use first names only please, and she scowls at me like i done something wrong. neutral

creepy dude now has my full name and license plate number if he cares to look out the window at me getting into my car and driving away.

ladies, take care of yourself. be paranoid, don't be afraid to protest security violations, don't let them make you give them your phone number or any other personal information if it isn't relevant to the purchase or situation speak out and guard yourselves always.

Do you think the break in attempt may have been an ill fated attempt at what happened to your neighbor? I would be so scared shitless. I do not play around. If I am walking the dog and a car circles suspiciously, I turn right back around and take him home.

I've had a gun in my face (robbed at gun point) and I do not fuck around with that shit. I'd stay at friends until the nutbar is behind bars. Or get another pit bull and a 100 pound rott...Please be careful.

You know, you never hear in the news about women with "dangerous" breed dogs getting smoked...note to self...must get another pit...

Do you have a home alarm system? If not, you'll sleep a lot better if you get one.

I'd suggest keeping a baseball bat or golf club near your bed. If you really want to go all-out, keep a sheathed knife handy (make sure your son can't work the sheath).

I know how you feel.

Well, the cops don't seem to think so. They called to ask me about the report I made the night before the murder and told me that they were coming to dust my back door for prints but the lead investigator then decided that they did not need to do it so that was that. Maybe they have a suspect in mind already...who knows?

But that certainly doesn't make me feel any more relaxed about the situation. It's a fucking scary coincidence, if it is just a coincidence.

I can't imagine having a gun pulled on me. Yikes.

I have a young child so I'm not really interested in having a big ass dog at the moment. I'd have to invest in training and stuff and I just don't have the time for that right now.

Baseball bat will have to do for now...but I just haven't picked one up yet.

My parents have told me that they want a security system installed even if they pay for it. I sent an email to my landlord today about the whole thing (he lives out of town and may not know anything about what's been going on).

Thanks.

I probably wouldn't be as freaked out if the night before the rape/murder someone didn't try to get into my house while I was home alone. I'm actually still super nervous about that whole situation.

Hard to relax and I've only spent one night at home since Wednesday. My son and I are back tonight though. neutral

Don't EVER be sorry for listening to your gut.

That's some really AWFUL stuff to be happening so close to home. And to know that someone tried to get into your house right before??? GOOD GRIEF!!!

You are doing right stuff. Staying alert and not panicing will help keep you safe. pray

Ya man, the people I know just didn't realize how close to my front door this happened until they saw the reports on the tv. I actually could see the tarp hung up to block the body from my front window.

my.front.window. neutral

That's some scary shit right there.

It's hard for me because I just can't stop thinking about the fact that someone was being raped and killed basically right beside me as I was in my home sleeping.

Ugh.

A neighbourhood with a mix of luxury homes by the marina/beach, middle class and a little further away subsidized housing.

My street is a well maintained street with families and during the day that bike path is very busy with joggers, bikers and families out for a walk. It's actually a beautiful area.

It has never been considered an unsafe neighbourhood...until now.

It's totally made me realize that a whole different world happens while the rest of us are in our homes sleeping.

nod Good suggestions. I was going to recommend a home alarm system as well. Stay safe, that's a scary thing to have to deal with.

We don't have the same gun violence here but there are crazy people everywhere.

Nowhere is safe.

I saw a statistic that said that the Ottawa Police receive an average of 2 sexual assault complaints a day.

That's nuts. I also heard through the grapevine today that Ottawa police have a terrible record in solving cases.

Shitty.

Yikes, that is scary. I moved very close to Central Park about 6 months ago and I make a point to never walk along the park side after dark, even if there are a lot of doorman buildings. Someone got robbed at the closest subway stop.

Hopefully your landlord/parents will get you the security system, but until then maybe you can find a sign/stickers to put in the windows/yard--you know to fake people out. Hopefully if a would-be criminal sees that s/he won't risk the chance to find out if you really have a system or not. And what about motion detector lights by doors?

Be safe.

Motion detector light is being replaced, and plan on having security system installed soon.

I'm at my parents again tonight. lol
