DWI: Why do people still do it?

This weekend was the Nautical Festival in my town. It's a festival every year that draws large crowds of people from around Long Island.

And being within walking distance to the site, my neighborhood gets inundated with horrific traffic.

SO...last night around 9:30 or so...as we're getting ourselves ready for the night...BAM!!!!!...a collision right outside our house.

I run outside and check on my car parked on the street. pray Thank God my car wasn't hit!

Turns out that some lady (with her MOM and her SON in the car!!!) had just come back from the festival...three sheets to the wind...and as she drove away smacked right into another car. Within minutes the lady's boyfriend/husband pulls up (I'm thinking boyfriend b/c they were in separate cars) and they're trying to talk the kid into not calling the cops. Fortunately for the kid, one of my neighbors talked some sense into him and soon the cops were on site. Within the hour the lady was handcuffed and her car towed away.

disbelief

I cannot express my disgust. You should have seen this chick. She was so drunk that she could barely stand without swaying from side to side.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE?!?!?!? Surely if she hadn't collided with this poor guy, she would've hit another car up the road, or God forbid, one of the hundreds of pedestrians on the street at that time!

WHY DO PEOPLE STILL DRIVE DRUNK????

Here's the funny part...this lady was in her mid-to-late thirties. The guy she hit was in his early 20's (probably a college student). HE was sober. In fact, later on last night, two other guys in their 20's (drunk as HELL) were on my corner...WAITING FOR A CAB!

woot! Hurray for responsible drunks!!!

In Atlanta last night, a drunk driver ran into someone's house and killed the teenage boy that was asleep in his house. Sad

because when you are intoxicated and with a bunch of intoxicated people you forget you cant' do something like driving.

Simple, because they're stupid. And until our justice system wises up and gives these lowlifes stiffer sentences, they won't get the message. When some drunk a-hole gets behind the wheel, that car becomes a two-ton bullet - no different than a street thug pointing a gun at you.

Don't make me a judge - DWI? HARD TIME, plus a lifetime ban on driving. I'm serious. Whole families have been wiped out because of this sh!t.

You don't "forget"...you choose to ignore common sense.
I'm 37 years old, and for as long as I can remember (starting in 3rd grade I think) the message of "Don't Drink & Drive" has been beaten into me...at school, in the news, in the media...so if I ever get so drunk that I lose any semblance of common snese and actually get behind the wheel of a car impaired...then I deserve whatever's coming to me.

...and blatant disregard for common sense in the case that I witnessed. That chick had TWO other adults with her, and neither one had the sense to take the keys away from her. All three should'a been taken away in handcuffs if you ask me!
