Floyd "Money" Mayweather Jr. retires from boxing
Submitted by Matthew Tremley on Saturday, June 7, 2008 at 12:12 AM EST

# In a shocking turn of events, Floyd "Money" Mayweather Jr. has decided to cancel his upcoming and much anticipated rematch against Oscar De La Hoya and instead has announced his retirement from the world of professional boxing.

In a statement reprinted on ESPN.com, Mayweather says, "It is with a heavy heart that I write you this message today. I have decided to permanently retire from boxing. This decision was not an easy one for me to make, as boxing is all I have done since I was a child. However, these past few years have been extremely difficult for me to find the desire and joy to continue in the sport."

Mayweather's last big PPV bout was actually for the WWE when he won his match at Wrestlemania 24 against The Big Show by knocking the former WWE/WCW/ECW Champion out with brass knucks.

well, its best for him as he's still young and got enough money to retire. No point of risking more damage.

Just please god dont let him go full time in WWE
I got more hits than Madonna's got kids!

For such a skilled fighter, I can't stand him. He can stop all that greatest ever smack anytime too.

Nothing says, "I'm afraid of fighting so-and-so," like retiring before a fight...

nod He's actually broken his hands in a couple of fights so I think that's more than just whining. Let's just hope he doesn't end up like Evander Holyfield, bankrupt after making over $130 million in his career. Plus, in that special Floyd said he gambles in the casinos just about every day. disbelief Sounds like a recipe for disaster to me. These fools never learn.

Jeff Fenech routinely broke his hands in almost all of his fights. He was a three time world champion (in three different weight classes)

It's whining.

I am a big fan of Floyd. I have watched many a fight and being female, its always enjoyable to get that involved and excited especially if I,m there live and in person. Men think I,m crazy being a woman and a boxing fan like I am, but I think it takes skill and concentration to anticipate what your opponent will do. However, if he feels that his heart is no longer in the game, I too would rather he remove himself instead of going out in a devastating defeat.

Really wanted to see the re-match with him and Oscar D, but thats o.k. I still love him, plus he is on cable with Ludacris and friends sponsoring some sort of reality show with up and coming boxers. Just can stay away I guess.

confuse Can't two completely different people have similar injuries, but because they're, ummmm, DIFFERENT people they heal differently????

I'm just sayin. . . shrug

Oh and BTW Mayweather won SIX world boxing championships in FIVE different weight classes so he's earned the right to do whatever he wants for whatever reason. I just hope he paid off his mortgage.

chair Ain't nobody yellin' at you comfort

I'm just saying I don't see how the fact that another fighter fought after breaking his hands relates to Floyd since he's a different person with different anatomy and physical makeup. By that rationale every player that tears an ACL should make a full recovery because some players come back from it.

And come on now, they weren't all chumps. His weight class has actually been pretty competitive over the years unlike the heavyweight divisions. Floyd is only 31 and he's been fighting since he was like 12 or some ridiculous age. I'd be tired of getting hit for a living too. Even though I like to watch Floyd get hit in the mouf cuz he talks ENTIRELY too much shit. lol Oh, and he was robbed at the Olympics in '96.

Are you watching tonight's fight?
