I just bought a computer from Walmart a few weeks ago when I got that $600 check from the government. I bought an Acer and it was around $587 with tax and all. I've been putting my songs into the windows media player for weeks and I'm almost finished. I've got the computer plugged into the stereo and I've been enjoying playing the songs using the shuffle feature.
Now I'm scared to get the internet because I'm scared I'll get some kind of virus and it will kill the computer (which has happened to me with two other computers in the past which my mother had given me). Hell, losing a $600 purchase is a big deal to me. I can't afford that. Unless I come into some more money to buy another cheap computer, I probably won't get internet at home. The only thing I look at on the internet is the org and I can do that at work when my boss is away. However, I miss looking at porn and I would have to do that at home. Other than the org, there ain't nothing else on the internet worth looking at other than porn, and that's what was killing the previous computers. Andy is a four letter word.

You can use any external drive, providing it's not formatted in NTFS.

I don't really need a gaming PC and I don't need a ton of storage (I have a couple external HDs).... I just want to be able to do the stuff I mentioned above but have a nice fast system. I want a desktop (no need for a laptop) and I'm happy with my monitor (it's a 19 inch or something... not a widescreen or anything, but it serves my purposes)... So, what should I do? Dell? Costo.com? Gateway? A site to build my own? Do I need 3 GB of RAM? I would also love a PC without a significant amount of preloaded software. I just want a really good/fast computer, but I don't need a top of the line.... If you don't want a lot of preloaded software, getting one built for you is probably the way to go. That said, you can get a decent desktop pretty cheap these days because everyone's going for laptops right now. I'd advise you to buy the best computer you can afford, because you'll be able to use it longer. If you buy something that's just toeing the mark, it'll outdated in a couple years and you'll just have upgrade again. You don't have to buy something that could control missiles, but I'd say getting something with mid high level specs is the way to go.
