Ok, cool. So we have two "curves works".

I plan on hitting the gym every day right after work, so it kinda just becomes part of my workday...know what I mean?

And that is what it's all about; making it a routine; the effect of the work out is dependable on what kind of effort you make. And you gotta keep doing it. The rest of your life.

I am just fat cuz I cannot make my brain accept sports is FUN. I will stay chubby for Rhonda.

I dunno what's wrong with me because I have been complaining about my weight and making plans to do this kind of thing FOREVER...but I just never follow though. Or I start all gung ho and stop after a week.

Now that we have this health incentive at work...I think it will finally work.

You can work out too mcuh Erin, be careful. Having the weekends completely off would be for the best. Dont do anything exercise wise, your body needs to recover from the workout in the week. I have two days off a week with my bodybuilding, and I always feel the best after my days off

I'm just curious. How does working out too much hurt you?

Hi Erin
Working out too much can hurt you in various ways. If you work out in order to gain muscles, you need to consider that muscles need at least 48 hours of recovery time. That is, if your strength workout was really intensive. You know, everytime you workout and train your muscles, you slightly damage the muscle tissue, and your body adapts by building more and stronger muscle, which, in time, will make you burn more calories ( and therefore, fat ) even when you sleep.
Don´t worry about getting too buffed up, that is not so easy and depends on the way you train, i.e repetitions, sets, weights, etc.
Of course you don´t have to wait exactly 48 hours for your next workout but make sure you don´t expose the same muscle to the same routines within those 48 hours. Just do something else if you workout daily, and change your routine sometimes. Do at least three cardio sessions a week for at least 20 minutes because that´s when you really start attacking the fat deposits and burn calories.
Take your time though if you haven´t been doing any running or other cardio in a long time. Your joints and whole body need some time to adjust.
And try to turn it into a routine, look at it as part of your lifestyle, as part of the things you do regularly , just like brushing your teeth. It´s no big thing, really. Stay away from carbs after 6 pm. and drink plenty of water.
The biggest obstacle will probably be your duties at work and as a mother so make sure you go straight to the gym after work because when you´ve come home in the evening, tired, you´ll probably not be in the mood to get up and go.

YMCA's almost always have these play rooms. Plus it allows you to check in every few minutes between excercises if you want.

I found that Curves cost more than a big gym. It may be different now, but 45 a month versus 30 a month i spent for a gym with daycare would be better. I dont have kids, though. But my gym has a big ass daycare in it.

Long ago, before Miles I used to go to the gym every second day. But this is really to lose weight so I will be going every day.

I checked out Curves tonight. I'm not totally sold on it because it doesn't look like it's going to be enough of a work out. I dunno, I guess it wouldn't hurt to give it a try.

I will be going straight from work because it's just around the corner from there.

hmmm thanks KoolEaze for this information. I just started working out this week doing cardio slowly so that my body could adjust but have also slowly increased the minutes of cardio. I went three times this week and plan on going at least 4 to 5 times a week from now on. I've also changed my diet and been eating more raw fruits and vegetables and lean meats (chicken, turkey, fish ex. Tilapia, salmon or tuna in the can). For snacks I eat a small portion of nuts as healthy fats. I've been cooking my foods the night before so that I can have food already prepared for my lunch the next day at work. I've lost weight before but the max was about 20 pounds without exercising. Hopefully I will be able to stick to this for a while and see some results. I know it won't happen right away, but you have to start somewhere. I'm just proud I made this change this week and have actually "started something" because i'm tired of my clothes fitting snug on me. I hear you about switching up the routine at the gym. Most of the time I do cardio, but then I switch it up by doing 45 minute aerobics classes as well. The Zumba classes (Latin dance inspired aerobics) are great for the love handles and well as the thighs (which is what I really need to lose inches on). If there is anything else that I should be doing to help, please let me know. My goal is to lose 30 to 40 pounds.

Erin, good luck to you. Hopefully the situation will work out and you will be able to work out in a reliable time frame that won't put strain on you as a mother. KoolEaze is right about going to gym after work. I don't have any kids, but I know that on days when I work (m-f from 7:30 to 4:30) if I go home, nine times out of ten I don't make it back out from the gym because I either take a nap or end up on phone.

eek Wow, you lost 20 lbs without exercising ? How did you do that ? Dieting ? I used to know a guy who also lost a lot of pounds by not eating after 6 pm, just veggies and water, no high caloric stuff.....but damn, 20 pounds is a lot.
And yes, dancing is the best cardio one can do, so most of those dance inspired aeerobics classes, like Zumba, will help you lose pounds real quick and feel sexier too, because of the positive hormonal changes. You can do more aerobics/cardio stuff without really overtraining but, as I said above, when you also combine your strength training with cardio, your muscles need time to heal a bit.
Another thing is the cool down phase right after strength training. Not really in order to burn fat, but to break down the milky acids/lactates after a heavy muscle workout, going on the treadmill or running a bit, like 20 minutes, will help your muscle tissue to heal faster.

Yeah I lost 20 pounds but it took like 6 months because I kept falling off it lol Yes and this was without exercising. I basically just cut back what I ate and cooked most of my foods. I only went out to eat on the weekends and made smart decisions on picking restaurant entrees. Its possible to lose without exercising, it just takes a hell of a lot longer.

Are you talking about men or women or both ?
Maybe they are overtraining. I used to overtrain a lot when I started. I would sometimes work the same muscle every day or every second day. It took me some time to realize that sometimes, less is more.
How do you work out, and what do you think about the different approaches , i.e Mike Mentzer´s one set, little volume/heavy weight method opposed to Weider´s / Schwarzenegger´s high volume training ?
And what´s your opinion on supplements ? I remember that pic of yours where you were injecting something with a syringe. Was that B12 or something stronger ?

I only use simple protein shakes, just the regular casein/egg albumin/whey mix but when I want to bulk up, I also use a bit of arginine, it gives me a bit more of a pump.
Any suggestions ?

So as a health incentive at work, we are getting a monthly allowance for a gym membership. Pretty rad.

However, I need to pick a workout, routine, etc that will have maximum results in a limited amount of time per day. I simply can't find a sitter for more than an extra 30min-45min a day. confused

Someone suggested I join CURVES, but I dunno if that little workout will really be enough of a daily workout to lose weight.

First of all, check with your doctor before starting anything. A phone call ought to take care of it.

If possible, I would invest in a personal trainer for one month. Tell the trainer what your goals are, and ask for a program that will accomplish them. If possible, find a trainer that can give you nutritional advice, too. Your diet is just as important as whatever workout routine you pick.

The most important thing, though, is - DON'T CHEAT. Do all the workouts when you should, do the exercises with proper form and breathing, and follow the nutritional advice you get.

Every. Single. Day.

That's the fastest, best and ONLY way. Good luck!

It is totally great for you, but I was a little concerned that the 30 minute program they offer didn't have enough cardio factored into it. I'm all for strength training, but I need that cardio to work off my fat ass.

Yes cardio is good for that! What I do, is robotic training, and working out at home. I am very lucky to have someone in my life the is a personal trainer..and he has me doing cardio via walking and leg crunches that kill me! But so far with his help and the robotic training I have lost 12 inches. smile I hope you find what you are looking for.

I'm talking about both and I don't think most of them are overtraining because the way most people at the gym work out isn't that stressful to the body. Now if you're really pushing yourself to go heavier or do more reps everytime you work out with weights, sure that can lead to overtraining. Generally it's their diet that really keeps them from reaching their goal.

Regarding training techniques I think that's not really relevant here. Hypertrophy even occurs in cardio and what works best depends on the induvidual although there are a few universal rules of course.

I don't thin Erin really needs to worry about supplementation. Other than protein shakes and vitamin supplements I don't use anything else. Funny you remember that pic. I completely forgot I posted it here. I believe that one time I took the pic, it was B12. wink

As far as the pump, there's still no evidence that a pump stimulates muscle growth so to me all the supplements that give you a great pump are a waste of money. If I really want a pump I can just do high reps, drop sets, giants sets, super sets etc. It's a lot cheaper and more effective.

Anyway, the heavy bag routine isn't really going to do much for her. Not if that's the only thing she's willing to do. I know quite a few chubby boxers. Cardio is great but if you want to lower your bodyfat you need to have a diet that allows you to shed some fat. Of course there's a synergetic effect if you combine that with cardio and weight training, but if you keep overeating you will never lose weight/fat.
