Don't know it.

- The New Russians by Hedrick Smith [not strictly speaking a history book but gives a great insight into the last years of the Soviet Union.]

Haven't read it.

Failed Crusade by Stephen Cohen is good too.

Koba the Dread // the 50 million

this is by Martin Amis and I thought it was quite a good analysis of left thinking over Stalin's crimes. Includes a fair bit of Drunken Hitchens so it's worth it for that alone. It's quite sad really.

Anna Polityskini and now I can't remember her name sorry.
Chechnya , basically up Putin in a big way.
she got murdered last year.
you can get snippets of her work in John Pilger anthology of journalism.

books by Trotsky. he's fantastics. There is always learning in his ramblings.

I assume you mean Anna Politkovskaya...

I have here her "Russian Diary", the book she completed shortly before being murdered in a contract killing. It covers the Beslan school siege in which hundreds of children died, Chechnya, the suspicious disappearances of Kremlin critics, among others, and offers "a devastating portrait of contemporary Russia," to quote a reviewer.

I literally haven't dared open it yet.

Funny that he wrote a book about boxing/a boxer I think straight after those two. A long-term obsession with Russia can do strange things to you sometimes:)..

- Soviet Politics - 1917-1991 by Mary McAuley
It's very thin - good if you are in a hurry.

- The New Russians by Hedrick Smith
It's the follow up to his "The Russians".

Failed Crusade[/i]
Thanks, I'll have to check it.

I'm doing things 'slowly but surely'smile I still have to write my introductory hello note!..

"I'll start a Russia forum over there!"
Great! I'll finally have a place to give vent to all the joys and frustrations that have accumulated in my little head over the 7 years I've lived in this wild land!woot!
For years I've been toying with the idea of starting a Blog or the like online about Russia, but 1] I feared that laziness would come in the way of regular commitment to it, and 2] when you are living in the country, with your nose on things, it can get a little overwhelming - what do I start with to tackle this beast of a territory?...

What period of time? I checked the Encyclopedia Britannica:
pre 1700
18th century
1800-1917
1917-1939
1939-

As outdated as they seem, go to a library, and look at the current Encyclopedias. They give valid overall info, for general knowledge.
I have Russian lit, philosophy, info, war history, etc.
Actual history of the country, people, migration, land developement, borders, Czars, etc, that's a quick source.
